Spiritual Biography

I read - and re-read - this book many years ago and found it one of the most entertaining and enlightening books I had ever read. If you are a questioning spiritual seeker - somehow not quite fulfilled by any organized, formal religion - this is the book for you - and even if you are satisfied with your religion, it will help you re-examine your beliefs. The writer's philosophy is that organized religion is great - as far as it goes - but that, ideally, it is a "school" from which one eventually graduates; that we evolve and become spiritually mature, beyond accepting any one set of dogmatic beliefs; that we come to see and appreciate the truth in all religions, while not adhering to any one particular set of beliefs. A great, heart-warming read, written from the writer's soul, and a wonderful assist to all spiritual seekers.

An inner-directed man gives up on the outer-directed church

George Fowler tells a story that almost every intuitive-feeling or intuitive-thinking Christian or ex-Christian could relate to. The public-institutional church will at its best neglect their needs and, at its worst, drive them out. Probably the same is true of other religions. The overwhelming majority of the population is outer-directed and uninterested in (or threatened by) the perennial mystical tradition that led to their religion's founding and is usually enshrined in their scriptures. Christians who desperately go from one retreat center, workshop, or teacher to another in search of sustenance their church will not provide will relate to George's story. Seekers on the New Age circuit will also relate to the dance of this "fallen monk." Unfortunately, the personalities that thrive on the public face of institutional religion will probably be offended by his critique of their little world, learn nothing, and go on to the next committee meeting or potluck dinner. (And that assumes they would read the book at all, which they probably wouldn't.) My one criticism is that George is a bit too harsh and far-sweeping in his judgment of Protestantism. He simply may not have a very wide experience with the myriad of denominations and movements, and the varieties of inner-directedness some have to offer.

A little soft shoe, perhaps...

I love George Fowler's book 'Dance of a Fallen Monk'. His subtitle, 'A Journey to Spiritual Enlightenment', is very apt for in this book he traces the journey his life has taken from 'down on the farm' outcast to monk to priest to marriage.

Fowler begins by describing his somewhat desolate and directionless adolescence, brought to a climax by friendship with Datus, a stranger in town who took an intellectual interest in Fowler (and gave him the sort of attention he craved). This friend died rather suddenly, and through a combination of intellectual and spiritual accidents and decisions, ended up after a stint in the military with interesting experiences, in a rather strict Roman Catholic monastery.

The period of growth juxtaposed with stagnation during these years is interesting to read. Sometimes it seemed nothing was happening, when it fact it was, and sometimes the 'action' wasn't what it was thought to be.

Fowler's trek away from the monastery, and later away from the Roman Catholic church (finally finding a home in another denomination) is an interesting one. It is full of wonder and awe, heartbreak and reconciliation. I was so glad to have the chance to see a glimpse into some of the pitfalls of ministry; I was thankful that I might have a guide for when I fall into error.

Perhaps the greatest message from this book for me, is that no vocation need be the final word; that all may build upon each other; that a change in direction can be natural and rewarding even if it breaks with a life direction; and, most importantly, one never knows where God will call one to be, and responsiveness requires being willing to break with our most sacred idolised beliefs.

Fowler is writing from the standpoint of a minister who has had almost the full array of possible postings and experiences. No matter how hard or fast or far he ran, the calling to the next stage would always find him, usually when he was unsuspecting, and intending on a different direction. Life is very much like that.

'For my last few years in the cloister, I felt so guilty about early intuitions of this awareness of the mystics, which tradition calls higher consciousness, that I often found myself rushing off to confession to ask pardon for 'sins against the faith'. I would later see that those early 'unorthodox' insights, intuitions, intimations--I would almost call them suspicions at that stage--were actually first breakthroughs into higher consciousness.'

Holding Aloft the Banner of Ethiopia is required reading for anyone interested in the history of Black radicalism in the United States, particularly the singular role played by people of Caribbean descent. Professor James skillfully examines the history and political economy of race relations in the French and Spanish speaking Caribbean. Here is the background of the African Blood Brotherhood led by Cyril Briggs and the Universal Negro Improvement Association led by Marcus Garvey. Moreover, this is the background of the singular Arthur Schomburg (actually Arturo Schomburg) who founded the pivotal Harlem library and research center. There is an important analysis of Hubert H. Harrison's role in inspiring Harlem's Black radicalism. Furthermore, this is the complex history of Jesus Colon's ideas on race and class. In conclusion, this book is essential to an understanding of 20th Black radicalism, modern Black leadership, and the background to Black Power. While we are waiting for Jeff Perry's biography of Hubert H. Harrison, the Black Socrates of the Harlem Renaissance, this is as good as it gets!

A STORY OF CARIBBEANS IN THE US, 1900- 1930s

Winston James' Holding Aloft the Banner of Ethiopia will clarify our understanding of Afro-Caribbean migrants in the US. It sheds more light on not just Hispanics but non-Hispanics as well.

His thesis is expository. He explains the "scale and determinants of Caribbean migration to the United States and the migrants' political behavior from the turn of the century up to the Great Depression."

Some well-known but poorly constructed and substantiated arguments, advanced by scholars about the political behavior of Caribbeans in their States of origin and as migrants in America are rejected by James. It could well be that literature on the subject--Afro-Caribbeans political views/behaviour--is just sparse. Then James is right, much more scholarly work on the people who came to America from the Caribbean should be done.

The book is fairly comprehensive in its study, by looking beyond the English speaking Caribbean to the Spanish speakers as well, covering the period 1900-1932.

His stated objectives for the book are:

i.) To present historical evidence and analysis to of arguments claiming that Caribbean migrants changed from "conservatism" in the Caribbean to "radicalism" in America;
ii.) To broaden the discussion beyond the Anglophone Caribbean to the Hispanic Caribbean;
iii.) To contribute to the wider understanding of the African Diaspora; and
iv.) To throw new light on the historical and cultural complexity and heterogeneity of the Caribbean Region and variations in it's Diaspora in the USA.

Of the Afro-Cubans in Florida, James tell a beautiful, yet sad story of a community of Cuban tabaqueros, cigar makers, who worked for Vincente Mart�nez Ybor the Cuban, anti-colonialism cigar producer who established a Cuban cigar factory in Tampa Florida. Some of these workers were leaders in the "Union de Tabaqueros," founded in 1879.

Strong class solidarity existed between whites and Afro-Cubans during this period. This cohesion was reinforced by the leadership of Jose Marti, the Cuban Nationalist who denounced racism and attempted to militarily remove the Spanish and to establish a Cuba, free from racism and intolerance.

James explained how the racial harmony of Cuban workers in Ybor City succumbed to bigotry and hatred by 1923.

The change was not instigated by white America's racial practices alone but by a combination of:
a) The change in the principled leadership of the Cuban-American Community after Jose Marti, was killed in battle to liberate Cuba;
b) The implementation of Apartheid in Ybor City by America's Jim Crow laws;
c) Penetration of the Cuban Community by other people living in the surrounding cities;
d) White Cubans realigning themselves for the privileges associated with whiteness.

Thoughtful and thought provoking book

Author Jill Cooper offers a thoughtful and thought provoking book, Should I Be A Stay At Home Mom, about how to decide whether to become a stay-at-home-mom or remain in the workforce. She deftly lays out the pros and cons of making this tough decision. Along the way we learn about her, and her personal decision making process, when she had to make the same decision as she uses her life experiences when writing her book.

While I am a Christian, I found the beginning of her book a bit heavy on the religious aspects of making this decision. For some readers this may be a turn-off. For me it made sense.

Also, I fully understood her thought process concerning becoming a SAHM as I went through these same decisions myself. I did discover I was happier, and we lived better, when I stayed home when my children were young.

We all have to make personal decisions on how to live, work and raise our families. Reading Cooper's book will help you decide what's best for your family.

Recommend with caveats given.

Biased book - presents only one side of the issue

This book is one of the most biased books I have ever read. I was extremely frustrated by it, because it asserted in the beginning that it would try to give both sides without telling you that you SHOULD stay home or SHOULD go to work. The whole book pushes mothers to stay home with their children, and makes it sound as if you will undoubtedly be hurting your family and going against God's will if you go back to work.

And, please note, this is coming from a mom who did decide, in the end, to stay at home with my babies. It's not that I am saying that moms should always go back to work - I myself did not. I just feel that a book purporting to be unbiased should not present such a biased view. If you are truly weighing the pros and cons of going back to work, and want to think about both sides of the issue, I would NOT recommend this book.

I wish I read this years ago

I enjoyed reading this book quite a bit. In fact I wish it had been around when my daughter was born and I was considering staying at home. We didn't think we could afford it at the time, but I think with the tips and strategies in this book I could have made it happen right away instead of working full-time for 2 more years.

I also enjoyed the talk on taking pride in what you do and taking your new job seriously. This is a great read if you're trying to decide if staying at home is a good option for yourself and your family, or if you are currently staying at home and want some validation along with some great homemaking tips.

Excellent Camaro reference

The Camaro White Book is an excellent reference when Camaro shopping. I carry it in my glovebox in case the errant Camaro presents itself. It is somewhat lacking in describing year to year changes, RPO additions and deletions. It some cases, it pretty much repeats the same info year by year. Most Camaro fans thrive on technical data; what gear ratio was available with a 6 speed vs. automatic and so on. Not as comprehensive as it could be, but still the best Camaro "bible" out there.

Should be standard equipment for Camaro fans and owners!

I purchased this book after Camaro production ended (temporarily, it turns out) in 2002, after buying the equally useful "Corvette Black Book." It's particularly valuable to buyers of these wonderful cars, and helps to sort out the real, original cars from the less desirable ones. Want to know about rare option packages like 1LE, or rare models such as police pursuit cars? It's all in there. There are many Camaro books on the market, but none of them approach the level of detail this one contains.

Loved it!

A great first novel by Ms. Tamara Philip. I loved reading about December and Tom. Ms. Philip did a wonderful job of bringing them to life and making them feel like real people. I loved her writing which merged a charmingly sweet love story with a touch of comic wit. I did however wish that there was a bit more conflict, if only to draw the story out a little. I can't wait to read Tamara`s next offering.

Awesome first novel!

What a great first novel! I was really impressed with the author's writing style--I think Tamara Phillip is a very talented writer. I thoroughly enjoyed this lighthearted and fun romantic read, and I can't wait to read her next novel!

[Also, I can't help but mention in response to another review... the woman on the cover may be light-skinned, but she looks black to me.]

The danger of drunken texts

I very well written sweet story. I especially liked how the celebrities came across as real people who were lucky enough to have jobs doing something that made them happy (and pays well!). It could have used a little more conflict - a backstabbing ex, some racist relatives, a kidnapping, but on the other hand, it's nice when people just get along without a lot of unnecessary drama. Plus, you can see where conflict might come up in the next book.

Note: I didn't know bw/wm was a thing so now I'm intrigued! In any case the woman is clearly described as a light skinned black (or possibly biracial) woman. Think Halle Berry, not Lupita Nyong'o. To the author, if the skin tone of the cover model is the worst thing somebody can find to say about your work then well done, madam! Well done!
