Meik Wiking is CEO of The Happiness Research Institute, Research Associate for Denmark at the World Database of Happiness and Founding member of The Latin American Network for Wellbeing and Quality of Life Policies. He holds degree in business and political science and has previously worked for the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vilstrup Research and as a director for the think tank Monday Morning. Meik Wiking has written several books and reports on happiness, subjective well-being and quality of life and is often used as a public speaker around the world.

Hands-on Hygge

Thorough, clear, and with a sprinkling of snark make this the best book I've read on "hygge," and I've read LOTS of them. Still looking for someone who can translate the concepts of summer hygge-ing from the cool, crisp woodlands and beaches of Scandinavia to the soggy, humid, bug-infested backyards of America though.

Repetitive Read.

Because the author, Meik Wiking, is the CEO of The Happiness Institute in Denmark, I thought he would be a good authority on the "Danish Secrets to Happy Living." After all, it's right in the title of the book, one would hope to glean some "secrets" to happiness. This seems to be a reasonable assumption. Instead, this is a repetitive and unorganized book with very little meat to it. Honestly, the whole thing feels more like a long winded magazine article.

With all the research available to the author, I would have liked to have read something more than this advice: light a candle, invite a couple of friends over, and eat cake. Really? That's the secret to happiness?

This book is such a fluff piece, I have NO idea why it has received so much attention. Minus one star for being misleading. You won't find any "secrets" in this book nor anything of tangible value.

Minus one star for repetition. How many times can an author say light a candle to experience hygge? The concepts in this book are superficial, yet they're repeated in almost every chapter. Plus, the chapters feel like they're out of order the way they are currently organized: minus another star.

I don't know who is to blame for this fluffy mess. The author? The editor? The publisher? The author has no trouble stringing sentences together. At times, the author did an excellent job of painting ideas. So...what happened? Why isn't there more information? Why are there hints of information at the beginning and ends of this book, with a bunch filler chapters in between? This book had so much potential. It could have been a useful book, a book to help people discover more happiness in their lives. What a wasted opportunity!

If you are interested in the concept of "hygge" you will love this book! It's an easy read, very informative, includes happiness data and research, and provides ideas for incorporating more hygge into your life.

I used this book for an intro circuits course. My professor was fond of saying about it, "It contains just information to get you into trouble."
That's it in a nutshell. This book does a pretty good job of introducing circuit theory in a manner that is very easy to understand. Each topic is broken up into a chapter. Most chapters are only a few pages long (I don't think any of the chapters are even 10 pages), and they do not go into depth.
It is aimed at students with no electronics knowlege, and with little mathematical knowlege. Though it does use some calculus, these equations are rare. 90% of the book is algebra-based.
I gave this book 4 stars because it assumes to little of the reader. While it is a college text, most high school kids that have taken any calculus could probably understand it with ease.
As an after-thought, if you are using this as a high school text, you'll probably enjoy it. It is a great text.

Modular and self-contained

This text is nice in that it makes very few assumptions about the course that it is used in. The book, and individual sections, are all self-contained. This allows the instructor to choose any sequence of topics for the course, and allows the inclusion or exclusion of math skills such as complex analysis (for phasors).

Although the text has some problems, there are only a few, and they are not terrific, so instructors will still have to go afield to find problem sets.

Although an excellent text, it is now 18 years old - a new edition would probably be welcome.

However, after Mao’s death, Da realized that an education and college might be possible, but he had to make up for the time he’d wasted. He began to study–all day and into the night. His entire family rallied to help him succeed, working long hours in the rice fields and going into debt to ensure that Da would have an education. When the final exam results were posted, he had one of the highest scores in the region and had earned a place at the prestigious Beijing University. Now his family’s past would not harm their future.

Born in 1962 in southern China, Da Chen had monumental hurdles to overcome before he could even walk or talk. Mao Tse-tung's Cultural Revolution was in full swing, and the descendents of landlords, who were despised, were routinely stripped of their wealth, beaten, humiliated, and sent off to labor camps. Da Chen, the grandson of a landlord, lives several parallel lives: he excels in school but then gives up studying in the face of unbearable pressure and harassment from teachers, students, and administrators. He is a self-taught musician but also a member of a gang of toughs. His siblings, banned from school, work from before sunrise to sunset in the muddy, backbreaking rice fields. But eventually all the dichotomies in Da's life come together, and he makes a break for a new life, with higher education as his foundation for future success.

Da Chen's engrossing memoir, adapted for younger readers from his book Colors of the Mountain, paints a colorful, painful, sometimes humorous picture of life during the 1960s and '70s, when formerly privileged Chinese families were at the mercy of Chairman Mao and his ruthless Red Guard soldiers. The writing is at times jerky, other times poetic, and Da Chen's time frame can be confusing. Adapted for young adults from Chen's memoir (Colors of the Mountain), this coming-of-age tale traces the author's boyhood in Maoist China. Born in 1962, Chen grows up in privation and humiliation as the grandson of former landlords. His family has been stripped of property and is cruelly treated by fellow villagers and politicos. Chen's siblings must quit school to become farmers, his father is fired from his teaching job and repeatedly hauled off to labor camp, and his grandfather is publicly beaten. Chen's only recourse is to excel at his studies ("I shone, despite their efforts to snuff me out"). The pacing here lurches a bit; what may have worked well for adult audiences could throw younger readers. However, humor and unflinching honesty inform the narrative, which is shot through with lyrical descriptions ("my fate stood undecided, wavering in the wind like a blade of grass along the Dong Jing River"). Some of the most involving scenes revolve around the boy's gradual inclusion in a Huck Finn-esque gang that cares little about his privileged background. Young adults interested in this area of history may wish to read Ji-li Jiang's recent Red Scarf Girl, which chronicles her adolescence at the time Mao was taking power. Chen's reminiscences add another intriguing perspective on this turbulent time. Ages 12-up.

Gr 7 Up-China's Son is a retelling for young readers of Da Chen's memoir, Colors of the Mountain (Random, 2000), a book easily accessible to older middle and high school students without adaptation. During the Cultural Revolution, even people living in remote villages like Yellow Stone in southern China felt its effects. The author grew up in this small village, and because his grandfather was a landlord, his family was persecuted. Though he was a bright boy and remained in school for most of this period, he was mistreated by students and teachers alike. He eventually began hanging around with a gang of young gamblers and soon abandoned his lessons altogether though he continued to attend school. The Cultural Revolution ran its course, and college became an option. At this point, Da Chen realized how limited his future would be without an education, but by now, he was woefully behind his classmates. He and his older brother began a rigorous course of study to prepare for college entrance exams. Da Chen's admission to Beijing First Foreign Language Institute is the culmination of a powerful but dry coming-of-age story about a young man struggling to figure out just who he is in a society whose very structure is undergoing massive change. China's Son joins Ji-Li Jiang's Red Scarf Girl (HarperCollins, 1997) and Song Nan Zhang's A Little Tiger in the Chinese Night (Tundra, 1993) as part of a growing body of literature about children living during this difficult period of Chinese history.

China's Boy-Definately an engrossing read!

As a 12 year old student, I was assigned to read China's Son as a class project. As usual, I took one look at the cover and felt discouraged. But as I worked my way through the book, I actually began to understand the meaning of Da Chen's words.
Growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution was difficult for poverty stricken Da Chen. The book shows how he deals with his hardships, going from top student to the child no one likes, just because of his social standing. Da even joins a gang of hoodlums in his neighborood, and slowly becomes disinterested in the school he once loved. After dealing with family issues, Da realizes that he wants more in life then to become an uneducated farmer. Determined to succeed, he studies to enter one of China's best collages. Da Chen leaves readers on edge, hoping and praying that Da will make it into collage.
Although the book started off slowly for me, I would most definately reccomend it to any jr. through high schooler. Reading about Da Chen's determination is inspirational!

An inspirational, insightful autobiography

China's Sons is the intensely personal account of Da Chen, born in China in 1962, is reviewed here for its importance to many an adult reader as well. Chen and his family were outcasts in Communist China, and Da had to drop out of school as a result. When Mao died, Da faced a long struggle to regain his education and go to college � and his entire family helped him succeed. China's Son is an inspirational, insightful autobiography.

Interesting child account of the Cultural Revolution

As an adult interested in China and the Cultural Revolution and having traveled many times to China, I read this book not really expecting to glean much from it. It was well written though and appropriately rated. I found Da Chen a character I could relate with (even as an adult) and discovered his account to be full of emotion: frightened, bitter, angry, excited, happy etc.. I think most of the "facts" were presented in truth.

Don Cousins spent his first 17 years in ministry at Willow Creek Community Church. The book by Karl Goodkin and Adriaan Visser is excellent joint venture provided by the researches from Europe and USA. It not very easy book but for the people wanted enrich the knowledge about should find it positive. Each chapter talks about possible impact of PNI on the one field of medicine. Stress, oncology, AIDS are the main topics in this book. Every chapter has a rich references section so everybody who wants to "dig in" deeper in the particular field has good starting point. I recommend this book for the physiscians, psychologists, immunologists and people working on the frontier of the PNI - it very good update.

An Analysis of Pop Culture, the Occult, and Spiritual Bondage

William Schnoebelen introduces his book "Romancing Death" with a candid look at his experiences in the occult, witchcraft, and vampirism. He openly discusses how he was blinded by the dark and dangerous deceptions of satan, disguised as an angel of light. He details how he became involved in WICCA, witchcraft, and satanism.

Schnoebelen introduces the reader to the phenomenon of the vampire in religion, culture, and history. He explores contemporary vampire cults, lore, and literature and the myth and reality of vampirism. He looks at how the vampire is portrayed in popular fiction, films, and television.

He goes on to warn how contemporary authors, in this genre of books, are targeting susceptible teens as their readers. He alerts parents, youth leaders, and educators of how over exposure can result in addictive behaviorism during these sensitive formative years.

Other features included in the book are: a synopsis of the "Twilight Saga," Biblical admonitions, insight in to Mormon doctrine compared to Christian theology, and a guide to Biblical entertainment. The extensive end-notes provide an excellent resource for further study.

The narrative is filled with examples of individuals delivered from demonic bondage. His testimony of victory over enslavement to the personal addictions to drinking blood and the use of cocaine give additional credibility to Schnoebelen's conclusions. Readers will be divided in their acceptance of these conclusions. His writing is strong, authoritative, and disturbing.

"Romancing Death: A True Story of Vampirism, Death, the Occult, a guide to Biblical and Deliverance" is a wakeup call to Christians to the dangers of occult, the reality of spiritual and demonic, and the promise of deliverance of these powers.

A MUST READ - SHINING LIGHT ON VAMPIRISM'S FALSE RESURRECTION

This was the best book I've read in a long, long time. Surely it's only by the Father's Grace that Rev. Schnoebelen survived his early experiences to become the much loved minister and Bible scholar he is today (I heard him preach in MPLS and the anointing was all over him - he is very genuine!). With countless scriptural references, this spiritual warfare manual for Christians will equip you to reach out to hungry souls headed toward destruction. With all the vampire movies, books, cartoons, games, music, etc. out there, more and more people are getting terrorized by darkness they can't shake free of - this book tells the story of countless victories in Christ!

NOTE: Schnoebelen's ministry website has tons of FREE RESOURCES, including prayers and other information on how to get free from demonic influences. Also, a complete and documented list of his credentials and certificates, including those defending his past involvements and theological studies/degrees. I now support this ministry because it has allowed me and my sister to be set free from the occult and dark arts!

Excellent exposer of the occult

Great book fully of information of the occult and it's attempt to becoming charming to young readers and movie goers. I really enjoyed the explanation of the changes that take place in the human body doing transformation doing shapeshifting. I strongly recommend this book for mature prophetic warriors and intercessors of Jesus Christ as well as any pastors willing to inform his congregation of the occult laden T.V shows and movies. I really enjoyed the information and the background of the new worshippers of death and the exposing the truth of their lies.

A good reference on RF System analysis

I came across this book after I went through a few books on RF system design. I guess I can confidently say that the book covers the most important aspects of the RF system design such as noise figure, inter-modulation and adjacent channel power ratio calculations. The cascaded system analysis (Noise figure and OIP calculations)are explained in a very straightforward and easy to follow manner. Of particular interest is the section on the architectural trade-off analysis. This section provides a very clear overview of fundamental issues that impact RF system design in most practical environments.

This book has room for improvement though. In particular, the ADC noise figure analysis for the band-pass sampling (appendix 3D) does not cover the ADC non-linearity, the jitter noise and the aliasing due to sub-sampling. Moreover, most of the examples are around the mobile hand-set systems. In my opinion expanding the analysis to the base-station could benefit some readers in this area.

Reader can find himself annoyed by many typo errors in the bibliography section. I am expecting these minor issues to be resolved over the subsequent editions. Overall, I recommend this book for RF system designers who need an up-to-date encyclopedia in this area.
