I liked this book a lot as a kid

I liked this book a lot as a kid, enough to reread it several times over the years. I decided to get the kindle edition for convenience and found that this is some kind of updated, revised version. This was not communicated on the product page, therefore I deduct two stars. The original story from the 70s gets five. Rewriting is fine but customers shouldn't be misled into buying something they didn't intend to. Poor form, Amazon.

Excellent Paranormal Teen Story

The first time I read this book was about 25 years ago when I checked it out from my school library. Though I did not recall the title or the author, through the magic of an Amazon discussion board, I got the information very quickly from another helpful reader and was able to obtain my own copy. Obviously, if it stuck in my mind all this time, the book is a good read, and I'm happy to report I enjoyed it nearly as much the second time as I did all those years ago.

Kit Gordy's father died several years back, leaving her and her mother alone. Nobody truly believed Kit saw her father in her bedroom on the night he died since he was out of town at the time, but now the memory is clearer than ever in Kit's mind. Her mother is about to remarry and take an extended European honeymoon, so Kit is enrolled in Blackwood Academy, an upscale, rural school for girls.

So her mother and new husband can catch their ship, Kit is left at Blackwood a day early. She should be thrilled at the school's picturesque setting, but instead, Kit is unnerved by a pervasive sense of evil. Her first night there, she is bothered by the fact that the hallway to the dorm rooms is stygian dark, and then she is plagued by disturbing dreams about being smothered by her bed's ornate canopy. She hopes her unsettled feelings will change once the school is full of chattering students, but then is surprised to learn that only four students have been accepted to attend the term. She befriends another girl there and has some good times, but no matter how pleasant her days, at night the old mansion's shadows darken, and the hallway to the student rooms is dreadfully dark.

Before long, the students at Blackwood start showing amazing talents in math and the arts, and Kit also notices that they all seem to be getting thinner. She often awakens with sore arms and fingers as if she had been playing hours of piano. Her letters to her mother don't ever seem to arrive, either. Other strange incidents among the students continue to occur and escalate, but Madame Duret, the headmistress, explains them all away, until one night Kit comes upon evidence that nothing at Blackwood is at it seems. Kit and the other girls are in terrible danger and there seems to be no way out.

One of the most important elements to the plot of this book is isolation, which is less and less a part of the modern world. The way it is done in this story is a bit dated, but since it could still work in a modern setting with a tweak or two, it remains believable. The story itself is chilling, with the sinister elements slowly building until its explosive climax. The ending could have benefitted from a little more fleshing out, but again, I believe that is a mark of the time period in which it was written. Books these days tend to drag endings out sometimes past the point where they should.

I enjoyed this book enough as a teenager to seek it out all these years later, and enjoyed it again as an adult. I highly recommend it.

very good book!

I must say this was a really really good book! I think that any reader who just wants a good page turner should definitely try this one. This book is about a girl named Kit and her mother has recently remarried. Her parents are going on a European tour and they are leaving kit in a boarding school while they are gone. When she arrives at the boarding school for girls, she realizes that something just isn't right. The place just seems sinister. She is very surprised by the fact that are only three other girls that come to the school. They were the only other ones that passed the unusual test. I'm not going to spoil it for you, but I'll go ahead and tell you that it is surprising and was no what I was expecting. I think that if you like to read an easy-read book and a thriller and suspense and mystery all mixed up together then you will like this one a lot!

If you could only afford one book!

As a network architect (12yrs), I have designed many large networks for major banks and Wall St firms. When it comes to technology design of networks, this book is the bible. (I own two copies, one for work and one for home, and I own two copies of the first edition, which was hardcover. The second edition is better, but the first I still refer to, sometimes just to review what has changed in the standards between ed. 1 and ed 2.
If you need to honstly design networks and do capacity planning with real capacity calculations based on queuing theory, and you were never great with queuing theory, and don't know who Klinerock is (The father of queuing theory), this book gives you the key modling methods used for each type of network (Cell, Frame, voice (for convergence)), and shows you how to plug in the numbers to get the information you need to size a network properly.
The first edition spends a lot of time on Frame Relay, and less time on ATM. The second edition spends a little less on Frame Relay and more on ATM. The SONET section is almost unchanged, but he found a way to make some changes that make it better. SONET is also pointed out as the NA standard, and that everyone else in the world uses SDH. When you are done with the chapter you know the difference, and why it is significant. It does a great job of pointing out that SONET is not a network, only a transport method, like pavement is not a transport vehical only a road by which transport vehicals can get people to their destinations.
If you can only have one network design book on your desk, and you are tasked with the function of designing or understanding professional network designs, this is the book.
While I realize there are a lot of people that design and build networks by empirical means, and they would get real uncomfortable if you asked them if they used a M/M/1, M/G/1, or M/D/1 model to base your capacity planning for QOS/COS on... It is in this book. (Oh yea... the proofs and theory aren't there so it won't give you bad flash-backs to college (:-)) But they do show the different types of models used (4), explain the key formulas, and use an example. You can use this to determine which model fits the network you need to build (from the core to the access... thats in there too!), and then plug in the numbers to the example to define your capacities. So you know your network can do the job, or if you have a weak spot, what the parameters of that weak spot are ahead of time to assure a CUA. (Cover your A**).
I am sorry it is out of print. I lent a copy, and of course never got it back. Now I am down to one!

Excellent book on data communication technologies!

This was very comprehensive book covering how the X.25, packet switching, Frame Relay, SMDS, and ATM data technologies work. It also does a good job of explaining how the various protocols interoperate by encapsulating packets, cells, or frames of data into their own packet, cell or frame formats. Very readable. The book has lots of diagrams and is not too technical. I learned a lot from the book and would recommend it to anyone seeking an in-depth overview of data communications systems.
This book did not really teach me how to design data networks, but I feel I have a much better understanding of how data networks function since reading this book.
My only complaint with the book is the excessive use of acronyms. While the acronyms are listed in the back of the book in a table, their pervasive use in the text was annoying and made it harder to understand. A minor irritant, at worst.
My best testament to the book is that I lost my original copy and was so dismayed by the prospect of not finishing it that I spent another $65 to buy a second copy!

McGraw-Hill or Darren Spohn?

This is one of the worst books I've read! It was poorly written, (lot's of type-o's). I also did not like the authors writting style. (he jumps around topics too much). I have read a lot of IT Books this last year and a half(over 50) and this is the first book I came across that I had to write a review about. I caution you if thinking about buying this book. The book I am reading now is Data Network Design 2nd Edition (reprint by Mcgraw-Hill copyright 2000 and it says it contains select material from this book) I don't know maybe McGraw-Hill screwed it up royally because the other reviews I've read are all high marks.

A Good "Carb Cycle" Diet

Choose Moore, Lose More for Life offers a good plan based on "Carb Cycling." The basic idea is that you try to trick your metabolism by sharply varying your carbohydrate intake from day to day. Most plans in this book ask you to alternate between low carb and high carb days.

The book offers four different plans, depending on your objectives: Easy, Classic, Turbo and Fit. Turbo, for example, promises faster weight loss, but you have to do 2 low carb days for every high carb day. For all the plans, you follow some basic rules, including: Eat 5 meals daily, Eat within 30 minutes of waking and then every 3 hours, and drink a gallon of water daily.

The book has a fair amount of material that not everyone will find useful. There's lots of background on Chris and his Wife and also lots of success story profiles. These are often of people who were very obese, and they include before and after photos are that are quite dramatic. The book also has about 50 pages of photos showing Chris and his wife doing exercises like jumping jacks. This is, I guess, a way to pad the book and make it longer, but not very useful.

There are about 35 recipes, divided between breakfast/snacks and lunch/dinners. The recipes seem clear and include basic nutritional info like calories, carbs, etc. However, the number of recipes is a bit low; similar books often have at least 100.

Overall this is a good presentation of a carb cycling plan and should be effective. I'd also recommend The Protein Express Diet: Rapid Weight Loss with a Simplified Low Carb, High Protein Diet. This has very easy to prepare low carb/high protein meals and will make your low carb days alot easier to get through. It also has its own diet plan.

Amazing

I started this book 3 weeks ago and the pounds are flying off. Chris Powell is amazing!!!! For the first time in my life I've stuck to a meal and exercise plan with no problem. Of course it was rough at first, and still can be when my family eats junk food but, the cravings for sweets are fading! :) so happy.

Started diet in May 2013 at 245lbs. Now Sept and am weighing 195 and continuing to lose. Purchased both books and recommend both but not in Kindle as its easier to reference back to the books. Thanks to the schedule and recipes Chris puts in the books, its very easy to stay with. would recommend to anyone and do!

From a seeker in the western esoteric tradition, not yet Adept.

If you are a seeker in the western esoteric tradition this is probably not the book for you. I will not jump on the bandwagon and speak poorly of this author since I have no first hand knowledge of him. Gossip is all too often motivated by the need to justify a pre existing or inherent prejudice against someone. Assumptions become exagerrated rumors that are treated as facts. Off my soapbox, I apologize for the digression. If golden dawn, Oto, AMORC, bota,tmo are groups you have studied about ( whether or not you are a member or follower of the organizations philosophy) this is likely not the Kabbalah you seek.

Powerful

This is a very powerful book to read. If you what to make changes in your life and don't know how to do this is the book for you. It explains taking the negative to the positive realm. I loved it for it gave me so much confirmation and input on things I am doing now and what I need to do. From the time I picked up the book till the time I finished it I could relate to everything Yehuda Berg is saying. I have read other books of his and I enjoy everyone of them.

This is a must read if you want changes in your life.

This wasn't my favorite Hedonist Six book

This wasn't my favorite Hedonist Six book, but it was alright. As the title suggests, the main characters have a one-night stand, so it pretty much jumps right into the erotica part of the book very quickly and focuses on it for a long while. I'm not a big fan of that, but it's to be expected in this kind of a story.

The original book (which I never read, just skimmed for comparison after I read this one), "Just For One Night", ends the morning after the encounter, while "One Night Stand" continues past that, delving into a continuation of Lucy and George's relationship and what happens with the job that Lucy is worrying about at the beginning of the novella. I thought the story after the initial encounter was really good; I'm glad the author chose to finish what she started in the original. It's also refreshing to see real conflict in a book, rather than a perfect meeting that leads to more perfect dates and a happily ever after.

a great sweet story

What a great sweet story. I loved it from beginning to end. So far whatever books I have read by Hedonist Six are all close to reality and so relatable, which is the best part about her writing. Lucy and George are by far my favorites of all of her characters. I hope we will see more of them in future offerings.

Loved it!!

I loved it. I read Just for One Night, and I wished for a continuation of the story to see what happens to Lucy and George. I was not disappointed. I still love how all the characters in her books have flaws and are very relateable. I also love how Lucy has to approach George and do the chasing. It was a good read.

Insightful Reading Advice, Realistic Practice Material

I'm a full-time SAT and ACT tutor, so I read this book with interest, especially since the SAT has just changed its format. I'm happy to say that this book provides excellent preparation for the Reading section of the new SAT, and it's a better resource for Reading than the the advice in many complete SAT books.

As a tutor, I really liked the strategies offered in the book. It's important for students to find a method that they're comfortable with, and the tips in the book provide many insightful ideas. I particularly liked the explanation of why students shouldn't read questions before reading the passage.

Another strength of the book is the passage and question realism. How well passages and questions are written is extremely important, since students should be practicing with material that is as close as possible to the real SAT. This book is a rarity in that the questions and passages are almost like the real thing.

When used in conjunction with the free SAT practice tests that the College Board makes available, this book is a useful resource for students who want to raise their Reading scores.

Well-written questions and exercises.

I had access to an advance manuscript of this book and was able to use it for PSAT prep. This Reading Workbook was instrumental to raising my own new SAT critical reading score from a 640 on the old SAT to a 750 out of 760 on the New PSAT! The passages and questions are well thought-out and are the the most similar to released CollegeBoard material than all other test preparation companies. Would definitely recommend.

Targeted practice for reading section of the New SAT

I purchased this book and a couple others to begin the test prep and college application process with my oldest. He's great at math and science but has trouble with English and writing. This book is smaller than Barron's SAT and should be since it's targeted practice for one-third of the SAT. My son started working with the book over break and finds it approachable and informative.

About the Author
Ed Wilson attended Vanderbilt, the University of Edinburgh, and Yale University where he received the first Doctor of Fine Arts degree awarded by Yale. He has taught at Vanderbilt, Yale, Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. Most recently he has been Executive Director of the Segal Theatre Center at the CUNY Graduate Center. He is the author or co-author of three of the most widely used college theater textbooks in the U. S. The tenth edition of his pioneer book, The Theater Experience, was published in 2006 by McGraw-Hill. The sixth edition of his text Theater: The Lively Art (co-authored with Alvin Goldfarb) will be published by McGraw Hill in theDecember, 2006. The fourth edition of his theater history, Living Theatre: Histories of Theatre, (also co-authored with Alvin Goldfarb) will be published in December, 2006. He is also the editor of Shaw on Shakespeare, recently re-issued by Applause Books. He has produced plays on and off Broadway and served one season as the resident director of the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia. He also produced a feature film, The Nashville Sound, recently made available on DVD. He is the author of two original plays, a farce, The Bettinger Prize, and a play about Ponce de Leon, Waterfall. He wrote the book and lyrics for a musical version of Great Expectations. All three have been given a series of successful readings in New York City and elsewhere. Great Expectations was given a full production for three weeks in February and March, 2006, at the Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke, Virginia. He conceived the idea of a musical revue of the songs of Jerome Kern which had a well-received try-out production in the fall of 2004 at Catholic University in Washington, D. C. Ed has served a number of times on the Tony Nominating Committee and the Pulitzer Prize Drama Jury, most recently on the Pulitzer Jury in 2003. For twenty two years he was the theater critic of the Wall Street Journal. A long time member of the New York Drama Critics Circle, he was president of the Circle for several years. He is on the board of the John Golden Fund and was also for many years on the Board of the Theater Development Fund, of which he served as President.

Alvin Goldfarb is President and Professor of Theatre at Western Illinois University. Dr. Goldfarb also served as vice president and provost, dean of Fine Arts, and chair of Theatre at Illinois State University. Dr. Goldfarb holds a Ph.D. in theater history from the City University of New York and a master's degree from Hunter College. He is the coauthor of Living Theatre:A History and coeditor of The Anthology of Living Theater with Edwin Wilson. Dr. Goldfarb is also the coeditor, with Rebecca Rovit, of Theatrical Performance during the Holocaust: Texts, Documents, Memoirs, which was a National Jewish Book Award finalist. He has published numerous articles and reviews in scholarly journals and anthologies. Dr. Goldfarb served as a member of the Illinois Arts Council and president of the Illinois Alliance for Arts Education. He has received service awards from the latter organization as well as from the American College Theater Festival. Dr. Goldfarb also received an Alumni Achievement Award from the City University of New York Graduate Center's Alumni Association.

Good for Theatre History Class, Same Info as Last Edition

I was required to get this book for my theatre history class. It is very well balanced and they divide the different parts of theatre history very well. It was a good companion. That being said, it is the exact same information as the previous edition (my professor even admitted it in class, then skirted around our questions of why he required the newest edition). If you buy the older edition for class, be aware the chapter numbers are one off of the new edition. Hope this helps!

A balanced view of theatre history

This book addresses quite well all the different historical views without losing content. I used this for two semesters of theatre history and am very glad to have had this book. I am much more informed and was able to really take a lot of information without feeling bored out of my mind, or angry at the lack of attention to contributions by anyone other than old, white guys. I would use this over other theatre history books. As with all textbooks, it's unfortunately high priced, but as I'll be keeping this, and used it for more than one semester, I am pleased overall with this purchase.

good conditions long delivery

I got this book for my history of design class and it is a very good read and its well organized and the book arrived in great conditions. But it took the sells about a week to deliver it to me. They did give me a heads up and apologized for the delayed delivery but still took way too long. But the book is great so just order a bit in advance or be patient :)
