This book has the length of a magazine article
By Thomas Buehner
As a reviewer put it - the book indeed does not waste the reader's time. Actually, it should not take more than an hour to read the text. All 19 pages of content. The rest are title/copyright pages, or empty. The print is done in an easy to read large font, and many pages have white space applied generously.

The author presents a thirteen page version of the plot structure followed by many adventurous stories in the last few thousand years, best known as the "Hero's Journey" or the "Monomyth", followed by four pages of basic writing and editing tips. The plot step instructions are short and most do not contain a lot of discussion of Why, which gives the text a touch of a connect-the-dots drawing. If you studied Literature, you have seen this content in your first year, probably peppered with technical terms.

The author writes "I have studied plot structure for years, and have taken everything I've learned and combined them into a logical flowing process which all great stories follow." (Quoted literally.)

Why three stars instead of one, for a book devoid mostly of content?

First, the text was written in year 20,011 (according to the copyright notice) and provided an interesting hour of science fiction entertainment - a glimpse into the future of the publishing industry, where professions like proofreader or editor are considered archaic.

Also, the text summarizes in a very readable way the the hero's steps of adventure, and even adds a few useful additions, e.g. the Kuebler-Ross model (five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance).

What might be good to read about plotting in addition to - or maybe even instead of - this text?

In my eyes, one of the best plotting books is "Plot" by Ansen Dibell. To the point, not much fluff, full of great information and good discussion, easily readable, and at a very affordable price. You should know about the Hero's Journey before you read "Plot". A very short version of the Hero's Journey is found on Wikipedia - look for "Monomyth".

If you want to read the books that describe the Hero's Journey in more details, I recommend Christopher Vogler's "The Writers Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers" which not only provides the What, but also Why and How, from a writer's angle.

Or go back and read the original book "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" by Joseph Campbell, who studied the narrative structure which the Hero's Journey is based upon. One warning about Campbell's works: He looked at the structure many stories have been told over the last few thousand years from a researcher's view, so his books are not easily digested.

excellent for writers
By Joseph
This book will improve the structure and productivity of your writing almost instantly. if you're a writer, definitely buy it. Reminds me of Blake Snyder's Save The Cat! books only with much less filler. This book gets right to the point and doesn't waste your time =-)

***UPDATE EDIT*** Since my review of this, another and more expansive book than this was released called "Punching Babies: a how-to guide" by Adron J. Smitley which is MUCH better and more detailed than this book, and it's for both novelists AND screenwriters. I'm glad i own both, BUT if you're looking for only ONE book to buy on writing then i'd suggest buying Punching Babies over this one. Just my two cents =-)

Great
By Becca
This is a great book for people who have stories but no idea how to approach them, who get caught up in minutiae and never get past Chapter One, who start rewriting before they have a complete plot, and yes, never get past Chapter One. I can't wait to use this process.
