Titles Deceiving...

The names of these novellas do them no justice. This was another good story. Just too short. Wish the three stories were just combined. Again, there is a cliffhanger, the story stopping at a moment we wanted to see play out. Looking forward to the final installment.

Let me preface this review by saying that I don’t usually read contemporary romance. However, there are some authors whose voices I love and so I have read their contributions to the genre and enjoyed them very much including Foreplay by Sophie Jordan, Private Research by Sabrina Darby, and The Bad Boy Billionaire’s Wicked Arrangement by Maya Rodale, which is the first book in her clever and oh, so fun Bad Boys and Wallflowers series.
If you want to laugh when you read a love story, this is the author for you. Rodale’s writing style is charming, funny, and adroit, and her characters and stories make you smile, laugh, and empathize. You can’t help but love them. I would even go so far as to say her writing is addictive. It just sparkles.
In this second novella we wonder, will Jane and Duke get together or is it still just pretend for appearances sake? A fauxmance (great word!)? And Jane’s old flame, Sam, is back on the scene causing Jane to rethink her feelings.
I can totally relate to Jane Sparks, as I’m also a librarian who has always followed the rules both at work and in life but, secretly, I wonder, should I break some rules? Jane fights this within herself daily; luckily, she has a push-the-envelope housemate and best friend who helps her out.
I love Duke and Jane and the backdrop of New York City complements their modern love story. The author lives in NYC and loves it and it shows throughout this story, with mention of landmarks and places in the city such as the New York Public Library (where Jane works), Magnolia Bakery, and Washington Square Park. She also gives locations as each scene unfolds, like in a drama.
One of the funniest parts is when Jane comes up with a pseudonym for her historical romance novels, which are actual books in Rodale’s concurrent Wallflowers series; I love the entire life-imitates-art and vice versa. There are even actual excerpts from the books in that series, The Wicked Wallflower and Wallflower Gone Wild. I sometimes think these would be apt title descriptions for Jane Austen’s novels if she was writing today.
There is a point in the story when Jane doesn’t think that either Duke or Sam will read her romance novel that brought to mind an article that Rodale wrote recently about men who read romance. Rodale is a champion of the genre and I love how she meshes parts of her real life into her stories.
Jane thinks of Duke as a rogue, a popular term in historical romance for a man with a renown reputation with the ladies; in this series, there’s this great meeting of past and present.
I also love how Rodale often capitalizes words for dramatic effect, adding to the tongue-in-cheek humor. “This was real. On some level, this was Something.” (p18)
The balcony scene. Whew. *fans self.*

"The love of my life was sitting here delivering the words I’d ached to hear. And all I could think about was Duke." (p15)
“There ought to be a word for this feeling. Perhaps happy + awful= hawful.” (p32)
“We would get back together then. I just knew it. Then we would get married. We would have babies, lots of books and a couch from Pottery Barn—none of which would fit in a Manhattan apartment, so we’d have to move to New Jersey.” (p47)
“But everything is different now. Except that I still want you, especially this brand new version of you. Jane 2.0.” (p48)
A fabulous addition to a fun and flirty series. The third installment comes out May 13, 2014.
