Michael G. Aamodt (M.A., Ph.D., University of Arkansas) is a Professor Emeritus of industrial/organizational psychology at Radford University in Radford, Virginia. Currently a principal consultant at DCI Consulting Group, he continues to teach a course each semester to fulfill his love of teaching. An award-winning teacher, Mike has taught courses in employee selection, job analysis, compensation, employee training and development, organizational psychology, organizational influence, organizational politics, and forensic psychology. He has published over 50 articles in professional journals and presented many papers at professional conferences. His fast-paced and humorous presentation style makes him a frequently requested speaker. He is the author of APPLIED INDUSTRIAL/ORGANIZATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY (7th Edition), RESEARCH IN LAW ENFORCEMENT SELECTION, I/O PSYCHOLOGY IN ACTION, UNDERSTANDING STATISTICS IN I/O PSYCHOLOGY, and HUMAN RELATIONS IN BUSINESS. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology, Applied H.R.M. Research, and Criminal Justice and Behavior, and is an active member in such organizations as SIOP, SHRM, IPAC, and the Society for Police and Criminal Psychology. UNBELIEVABLY BORING.

This text was required for an Industrial/Organizational Psychology course. It has to be one of the worst academic texts I have EVER used. It is painfully boring, not super readable and every chapter is literally nothing but 40 pages of non-stop text. No visually stimulating pictures, NADA. To make matters worse, this was for an online class so it was really the only tool I had for discussion posts and exams. If you are a professor, PLEASE do not assign this book. Your students will thank you for it.

I hope you don't get stuck reading this book. This book was required for the class that I was taking. It was a total snoozer. The book was very bland and super boring. There was nothing to stimulate the eye or the brain. I'd rather read the side of the tampon box over and over than this book.

DO NOT RENT

I rented two textbooks from Warehouse Books, please save yourself the aggravation DO NOT RENT OR PURCHASE. The books came in an okay condition, I barely used either of them. They wanted to charge me over $173 for the damage of one book and $80 for the damage of another book, both of which I never caused damaged to. This company is fraudulent and disgusting, please save your time and rent from your schools. This is a headache and a half, and amazon will never have anymore of my rental textbooks due to this disgusting company. PLEASE STAY AWAY, DON'T GIVE THEM A CENT!!!!

We should seek it not in its shriveled abstractness and formality, argued Will Durant, but clothed in the living form of genius. He advocated with Ariel, his wife and partner, that we should study not merely philosophies, but also philosophers. We should spend our time with the saints and martyrs of thought, letting their radiant spirits play about us until perhaps we too, in some measure, shall partake of what Da-Vinci called 'the noblest pleasure, a joy of understanding.' Pleasure of Philosophy:

Epicurus of Samos died in 270 B.C., and his philosophy had been controversial since then. One reason is our tendency to reject pleasure as morally good. Durant has let down Freud theory of the 'pleasure principle' and Nietzsche glorification of the instincts, associated with evil and perversion, based on their unsound anti-Epicurian tendencies. Pleasure inclusive usages, according to Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, are most important in moral psychology, ethical theory, and the studies of the mind, including all joy and gladness, feeling good, or happy. Pleasure, as both intellectual and physical stimulation, promote happier philosophy fans. Intellectual pleasure, argues Roger Scruton, arise in contemplation, during the senses feast on favored subjects, when we rise above our purpose and begin to enjoy what we are doing for its own sake.

Science without Philosophy:

Science wishes to resolve the whole into parts, the organism into organs, the obscure into the known. Science tell us how to heal and how to kill. It reduces the death rate in retail and then kills us wholesale in war. But only wisdom, desire coordinated in the light of all experience, can tell us when to heal and when to kill. To observe processes and to construct means is science. To criticize and coordinate ends is philosophy. Science is analytical description; philosophy is synthetic interpretation. But, because in these days our means and instruments have multiplied beyond our interpretation and synthesis of ideals and ends, our life is 'full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.' For a fact is nothing except in relation to desire. It is not complete except in relation to a purpose and a whole. Science without philosophy, facts without perspective and valuation, cannot save us from despair.

Twenty years after its first publication in 1929 as, 'the mansions of philosophy,' 'and inquiries for it have mounted to the point where a new edition seemed forgivable, in the authors own words, he gave this confession as a preface to his revised edition, despite its gay new title!

"Some pages betray their composition a quarter of a century ago, and the reader will smile at several bad guesses that they contain; I have since found it safer to write about the past than about the future (Durant: the historian). Certain pages are heavily sentimental, but they still express me faithfully. others are cynical or unduly pessimistic, especially in chapter 18, 'Is Democracy A Failure?'; having discovered my own fallibility, i should be more lenient now... Despite these sins the book has, I like to believe, some redeeming qualities; and I send it forth again on the seas of ink to find here and there a kindred soul in the country of the mind." The Dukan diet is the only diet that I have tried so far that has actually worked and that was easy to follow. Fantastic weight loss for minimum effort. I was so excited and couldn't wait until the book came out. I have so far tried several of the recipes and they have all bombed!!! Not one recipe has worked out so far and I have followed them to the letter. The only thing it is useful for is to provide ideas on what to eat, but you will have to experiment and adapt the recipes in order to make them work. The diet, however, is definitely worth following.

Great good from a devoted Dukanite

My wife and I have been waiting for Dr. Dukan's "American" version of his cookbook as we've been on his diet for over 6 months and have lost exactly the amount of weight his program predicted. It is nice now to have a cookbook with US measures and ingredients as this diet is wonderful and really pretty easy to follow. We highly recommend the diet and this cookbook to anyone who has been frustrated by the myriad of diets that are out there as this one is successful if followed precisely.

A must-have for appliqu� enthusiasts!

If you are looking for a reference book for appliqu� that has solid, easy-to-understand techniques, this is the book you are looking for. The explanations and illustrations are clear and straight-forward and fun to create. I am new to sewing and I love that The author covers all the steps from beginning to completion. I love the patterns and there are all sorts of designs, including some fun holiday projects. It has full color pictures, lots of cute ideas for clothing. I am already jazzing up my plain old sweatshirts and tote bags! So if you are interested in tackling an appliqu� project, this book is a must-have!

Great Little Book

I picked up this book as a freebie and was pleasantly surprised to find quite a number of applique patterns PLUS a website link to each pattern individually. The full-size patterns can be printed out from here. Ms. Koepp gives clear, easily understandable instructions as well as information concerning supplies needed. Pictures of finished projects are included. The assortment of applications is quiet basic...birds, hearts, stars, flowers, snowmen, an angel, and more, which makes this book appropriate for beginners and provides any seamstress with a very good assortment of basic patterns.

A compelling and engaging journey appropriate for a wide variety of readers

The Magic of Math is a fantastic book, as one would expect from Arthur Benjamin. Benjamin's enthusiasm shines throughout the book, mathematical ideas are beautifully explained, and each chapter is surprisingly hard to put down! Moreover, the book is appropriate for many different audiences, including:
-- Anyone who wants a better understanding of what it means to do mathematics, or wants to see the beauty and creativity inherent in mathematics
-- Middle and High School students who want to see some of the mathematics ``behind the scenes'' of what they're learning in school
-- Burgeoning mathematicians who want to see mathematics beyond the scope of the grade school curriculum
-- Tutors and teachers who want an easy source of fun material to engage their students
-- Anyone who wants to really understand *why* the math they learned in grade school is true.

People familiar with this genre of mathematics outreach books (e.g., Here's Looking at Euclid, The Joy of X, Love and Math, etc.) often find that many of the books are very similar, and that their contents tend to overlap greatly. While readers will certainly find common topics like the Pythagorean Theorem or the Fibonacci Numbers in Benjamin's book, I think they'll also encounter quite a substantial amount of new material in this book. In particular, Benjamin goes into more mathematical depth with much of the material he discusses. Further, a quick skim of the contents reveals a lot of beautiful mathematics that is not commonly in outreach books, including an especially thorough discussion of exciting topics in a field of mathematics known as combinatorics. If you're interested in understanding the kind of thinking a mathematician does, then you'll find these chapters especially novel!

At the same time, Benjamin's book is very readable. He clearly motivates the mathematical ideas he shares, and then proceeds to explain them in concrete and understandable ways. Of course, as with any good book, this book will make you think! However, you'll have Arthur Benjamin supporting you along the way, and you'll find yourself learning quite a bit of mathematics with that support. Benjamin is also sure to include a few optional and sometimes particularly robust mathematical ideas, but he clearly marks these as ``asides,'' explicitly indicating to readers that grappling with these ideas is not necessary for understanding the material. Instead, these aside sections serve to make the book more interesting to people who might reread sections of the book, or who already have an especially strong background in mathematics.

The Bottom Line: This is a great book that can (and should!) be read by people from a huge variety of backgrounds. Beautiful mathematical ideas lie waiting to be discovered, and readers will encounter both engaging prose and crystal-clear mathematical exposition.

A child's wonder

My third grade granddaughter got a D in math! When I squared 81 in my head she was disbelieving until we did it longhand. Her eyes widened and ensued an excited review of all she had learned in school and was so excited to share.
The book paid for itself several times over from the first few pages.

Aurthur Benjamin works wonders with numbers

I only wish Arthur Benjamin were around when I was struggling with math in high school and college. Arthur Benjamin's books have changed my life and my perception of myself as a word person, never a numbers person. Now I am both. The section on magic squares is worth the price of the whole book, and there is so much more.

As a result, learning how to do cool stuff with D3 meant that I accumulated a sizeable number ways to help me out when the going got tricky. Then I realised that these could be useful for others who were trying out d3.js and who were at a similar knowledge level.
So here we are! A collection of tips and tricks for d3.js written by a noob for people who might consider that they're in the same situation :-).

What's in the book?

I've captured the appropriate code (in cool looking coloured text) and added in heaps of illustrations of what's going on so that you will get more traction at the start of your learning process than I did.

The awesome that is Open Source.

The book has a lot of information in it. Currently (at time writing) it counts up to about 490 pages, so it's not a short read but I've tried to pitch it in sections so that if you find something interesting, you can read parts in isolation. There's a sizeable amount of content on the d3noob.org blog site from the book and hopefully between the two, people will find a way that will help them improve.

Diamond in the Rough

I love the book! The author seems like one of us--if one of us means any average bloke with a penchant for technology and a desire to learn and apply new things in our lives. In this particular case, learning a javascript data-visualization framework called D3. At best, the technology is interesting nicheware. It also has enough technological twists to keep mastery just beyond reach. There are some good resources out there, but it takes a good teacher to shepherd one along the way. In the end, I think a good teacher is simply a good explainer. Maclean is certainly that. His self-deprecating style can grate on me, but that's a forgivable sin (preferable over its evil twin arrogance!) His approach is so accessible, I read the tome in a day! I thank my lucky stars--and Mr. Maclean-- for his efforts. The book allowed me to move forward on my project much quicker than if I had not discovered this piece of gold when I did. Kudos and much love for your efforts!

Great to the point guide

This book was a great getting started with d3.js. I have gone thru several getting started books and have struggled to get past some of the earlier chapters because they don't apply to anything I'd do. This book I was able to go thru from beginning to end in 2 days and learned a TON regarding the DOM, customizing graphs, and using mySQL. The one thing I was really excited about was integrating bootstrap to make a multi-chart layout and unfortunately this section of the book is for v2 and it does not work with v3.

Organized around the thesis that "gender has been the most important factor in shaping the lives of European women," this sweeping history describes women's experience in terms of social groups and work, with chronology secondary. The approach, which revealed interesting themes in volume 1 ( LJ 5/1/88), is inadequate for the rapid changes of the 19th and 20th centuries. More minor flaws mar this volume. The section on prostitution flows directly into that dealing with performing arts, perpetuating an unfortunate old association. Women's struggles to organize trade unions are greatly oversimplified. Informative, yes; balanced, no

This is an interesting, informative, important contribution to the history
of sex and gender in European societies. Certainly we need greater understanding
of women's particular difficulties besetting them over the centuries. But do we not
as well need to appreciate the difficulties men encountered? The authors
focus nearly exclusively on women's difficulties, ignoring or tamping concern
for men's challenges. By giving men's issues short shrift, women are made out to be
victims and men the unspoken villains.

This book needs editing. Documentation is essential, but excessive
documentation is tedious.

FABULOUS book!

Buying Ricki Heller's book Living Candida Free and joining her Sweet Life community was the single best thing I have ever done for my health. After cooking for 4 boys for over 20 years, I was burned out and decided I was going to go the route of very simple meals. Many of those meals were to grab a fast (organic, but still processed) veggie burger or something similar. Recently, I became very sick to the point of lying on the couch and watching a movie was a huge effort! After 5 weeks of being sick, I went to my ND and she diagnosed Candida and suggested I go on the "Anti-Candida Diet". After looking at all the things I couldn't have, I was despondent. Seriously, "This was NOT going to be fun AT ALL", I thought. I went online and looked at the different books on this diet. After reading the reviews on the books, I decided to buy Living Candida Free because many people said it was EASY to understand. (And, it *definitely* was!) At the same time, I joined Ricki's group, The Sweet Life. There, I found support not only from Ricki, but also from a group of people that were going through the same process as I was. Best of all, when you join the group you have access to TONS of extra recipes.

I started making recipes from the book, followed the diet strictly, and within one week I was feeling AMAZING!!! I could not believe the difference in just one week! Three weeks after starting the diet, I jump out of bed, can't wait to start cooking and have more energy than I have had in years! The biggest thing is that I feel I am eating better than I have in my life with incredible tasting meals! I don't feel I am being deprived of anything at all. In fact, my body is responding so positively to this way of eating, I can't imagine going back to processed foods and sugary desserts. I am slowly making my way through the recipes and OMG are they DELICIOUS!!! Pizza? It's in there. "Chocolate" pudding? It's in there. "Sun dried" tomatoes? Ketchup? Cookies? It's ALL there!!! THANK YOU, Ricki Heller, for writing this book and others, and for your amazing Sweet Life group! You have changed my life for the better!!

A MUST have for ANYONE that has uncontrollable sugar cravings.

This book is a life changer. Ricki Heller is amazing and has taken her knowledge and passion and REALLY has life changing information and recipes. Not only is the book exactly what anyone needs that suffers from sugar addiction, or that has compromised health that may be due to candida. Ricki has all the resources concisely put in this book and on her videos' etc. Outstanding book, amazing recipes.

A REALLY GOOD BOOK ON CANDIDA

It has a great index, She is very knowlegeable. She gives ideas for lots of allowed items on grocery lists. She writes well and gives good explanations. She has a ton of recipes that are allowed in the Anti Candida Diet. I liked it alot. She writes in story form, so it is easy to follow her.
