Some reasonable insights

I've read several of Weiss' previous books, and like his style of accessible writing combined with his consulting industry knowledge.
This book conveys much of that same down-to-earth style, and has some insightful aspects from his previous book incorporated into this one for easy reference.
I probably would've rated this 3.5 stars, if that was possible on Amazon, and the reasons for that are two. The first is that the book spends an inordinate amount of time on talking about general business topics like home office versus traditional office, where to print letterhead, and things that even a cursory glance at the SBA website could tell me. Since I'm already in business and am reading this to increase my success, I could do with far less filler topics.
The second reason I knocked some points off is that I can see that some of Dr. Weiss' thinking is rooted in past business practices that hardly make economic sense in today's environment. Suggestions about hiring local graphics designers and other service providers really don't make sense in the era of crowdsourcing. I successfully use outsource providers for a variety of services from virtual assistants to programmers, who I have never met and never intend to. They do their jobs well and for costs far less than would be possible if I limited myself to the pool of providers available in one locality. Likewise, they offer an expanded talent pool for skills not readily available in my immediate area. I had to discount entire parts of the book that offered suggestions of this nature.
If you have read previous books by the author and liked those, then this may be a handy reference guide that sums up a lot of the most valuable parts of his advice and insights. That said, if you've even had the most basic exposure to small business, then you can probably skip right past the first few chapters.

A Guidebook, Not a Guarantee

The most important sentence in this book opens the Prologue: “I was fired.”
Alan Weiss elaborates: “Believe me, I know exactly what it’s like to launch a business” during “a lousy economy, with no Internet, in a state where we had few contacts, and with no reserve or cushion.”
Instantly, the reader knows that Weiss faced the challenge of starting over when he thought he had a secure business future—an experience shared in recent years by many high achievers.
Because he has excelled as a recognized expert, he shares his guidelines “to express what’s clearly possible for you.”
A self-designated contrarian, Weiss explains why you don’t need a fancy office in a prestigious building, why you should not confine yourself to one category—such as consultant or trainer—and why becoming extremely active in your professional organizations may use time and energy you should reserve for more productive interactions.
Although the brief “scripts” he recommends for various situations have value, readers will want to re-phrase them to fit their own language style.
I applaud the author’s emphasis on an entrepreneur’s self talk: “The first sale is to yourself. If you can’t become impassioned about how you can help others, then perhaps you should go into woodworking or philately, where loud noises are unwelcome and you generally work alone.”
Simple conversational language, sprinkled with occasional humor, make this serious topic livelier.
A precaution: I recommend that readers not take the title literally. “Million Dollar Launch” does not guarantee that following Weiss’s 90 day plan will move you into quick wealth. For this reason, the subtitle presents a more realistic approach: “How to kick-start a successful consulting practice in 90 days.”

Alan Doesn't Disappoint

I have been a busy medical device / FDA regulatory affairs consultant for over 18 years, primarily by following his advice in my highly recommended favorite of his, "Million Dollar Consulting", which I still recommend as the premier book on the business of consulting. This book is more a 1) distillation of the key points of Million Dollar Consulting, together with 2) key advice to get your business off the ground running in short order, his "90 days". While I started with a major client within a week of beginning my practice (result of my network), a year later I found out the difficulting of "starting" since I did no marketing when I was so busy with that first client, and hit a major drought. Since then I have employed his tools to "keep the pipeline full", and have never looked back. In this new book, he emphasizes many things, but I appreciate a basic principle he emphasizes, to not focus on selling but on helping others (something I've always believed in). I have found that those potential clients that take advantage of "free" advice, would do so anyway, and you wouldn't want to work for them anyway, and those that find such advice useful, will hire you after "testing the waters", even when they already know your basic methodologies. I detest "cold calling" which basically doesn't work in the consulting field anyway, and have used his and others' advice to get your name and abilities out in front of potential buyers by means of many different avenues, repeatedly. I have virtually every book on consulting written, and read them all, and still come back to Alan's as the best consulting business resource / advice.
