Mele is clear and a joy to read

This is a wonderful introduction to the main perspectives on free will. It would be perfect for an introductory course in Philosophy at the undergrad level. It makes seemingly complicated ideas clear and simple. Its main focus is an examination of whether certain experimental results in Psychology and Neuroscience, such as Libet's, undermine free will. Mele does a good job showing the mistakes people have made in interpreting these results, and the limitations of such scientific claims.

The one star review below is meant to be a criticism of Sam Harris' 'Free Will' book. While it is a fair comment on that belligerent little book, it should be removed from here, since it is not about Mele's book.

Both books are great and appropriate for undergraduates

A solid introduction to current supposed scientific challenges to the existence of free will. Written as a dialogue to be attractive to students. I think this book is successful at what it sets out to do, but I personally prefer Mele's "Free Will" which covers the same material, for cheaper, in a clearer and more accessible way. Both books are great and appropriate for undergraduates.

About the Author
Christian Henry Tobler has been a longtime student of swordsmanship, focused on the study of medieval Fechtbucher (fight books) since the late 1990s. Now with five books, two instructional DVDs and a growing number of published articles and essays to his credit, he was the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for Historical European Martial Arts in 2013. Mr. Tobler serves as Principal Instructor for the Selohaar Fechtschule. He lives with his wife in the United States, in rural Oxford, Connecticut, where he teaches a weekly class on medieval German combat, surrounded by far too many books and pieces of arms and armour for the size house that they live in.

How to fight with a sword

Some years ago a gentleman selling books told me that the vast majority of people who pick up a book about swordsmanship, don't particularly care about the historical detail. As long as they know it's a historically valid system, all they care about is whether the book can help them learn to swordfight.

Christian Tobler's first book, Secrets of German Medieval Swordsmanship is a fine book, analysing Sigmund Ringeck's 15th century combat treatise. In Fighting with the German Longsword, Christian has taken a simpler approach. Essentially he says, I have read and interpreted a whole bunch of 14th-16th century German works on swordsmanship, and based on them, this is how I teach my students. We have enough historical detail to convince us that this is a genuine historical art, used in real combat by medieval kights (and hence immeasurably superior to any modern made up system), but beyond that, we are just taught how to fight with a sword, in a series of straight forward and logical lessons. The book is presented clearly, with nice photos, well written explanatory text and a clear progression through the skills involved in mastering the art.

Anyone wanting to learn how to use a longsword, the late medieval knightly sword, used in two hands on foot, should make sure they obtain a copy of Fighting with the German Longsword.

This is not a refernce book, it's a long-distance teacher!

If you have ever wondered, "Can I learn to fight with a Longsword" this is the book for you. Christian Tobler answers that question with a definitive "yes" and backs up his assertion with an incredibly clear and precise teaching manual.

"Fighting" opens with a discussion and explanation of the knightly art of defense and provides grounding in the masters of the art. However, he moves quickly on to modern considerations of safety and practice tools. This is invaluable information for the modern practitioner of the art, as until now the only way to determine what tools one should invest in were internet searches and guesswork.

Then we enter, as students, into the meat of the work, which is practical information on the art. The basics of footwork, balance and timing are not neglected or assumed, but are explored with depth, as are the Guards and Wounders. From there, the manual moves through the Five Master Strikes, Wrestling, Winding and finally, though the main focus of the manual is on unarmored combat, ending with Armored Combat.

The uniqueness of this manual is in its teaching ability. Each concept is presented first theoretically, and then is followed up on with drills to physically impart the concept to the student. It's not just a read-along where you spend your time imagining someone else performing the technique, but rather a book which encourages you to get a partner, grab a waster, and try out the techniques for yourself. Finally, most chapters wrap up the techniques with a decision-tree, further reinforcing the use of each technique in its proper place. This means that each technique is presented at least three different ways, aiding the student in his learning process.

Though the book is filled with numerous photos, charts and drawings, the real prize is in the text. Mr. Tobler took the care to ensure that a person who simply read the text would fully understand the concept. He did not rely upon the pictures to tell the story as so many other Martial Arts books do, but rather the pictures merely support what he already told you in words.

I can say without a doubt that if you want to learn to use a Longsword in the German style, but have no access to a teacher or school in your area, you can do so with this book. In fact, I own two copies, one that goes about everywhere with me, one that stays at home. Order it today, you will not be disappointed.

There have been a number of books in recent years that have addressed the use of the European longsword, but very few have taken a specific historical martial art, picked it apart, and presented it in a clear, logical way, as Christian Tobler does here in Fighting with the German Longsword.

This is not just an collection of techniques from German masters in the Liechtanauer tradition of fighting: It is a how to guide, one that presents the basics of footwork and body mechanics, and building off them with the core concepts and techniques to embody the reader with a good sense of the foundation of this system. One of the really excellent things about this book is that a complete novice can read it and grasp the concepts easily, while a seasoned practitioner can still read it from cover to cover and learn from it.

Fundamental concepts such as distance and timing are discussed, primary and secondary guards, feeling your opponent's actions through the blade, and understanding the five master strikes. While the majority of the book in focused on fighting without armor, it does go into armored fighting as well, and there is even a small section on spear, which helps illustrate key longsword concepts such as winding. There is also a section showing major concepts in unarmed fighting, as this forms the basis of much of the longsword.

Christian Tobler is also to be commended for his honest approach to research. The text is full of examples of where the techniques came from out of period manuscripts, and Christian clearly admits where he has stepped in to fill in some of the blanks that are not explicitly clear in the original texts. Naturally there are differences in interpretation amongst practitioners, but even the places where Christian has had to take some creative liberties, he is still making sure that his interpretations are as faithful to the system as possible.

Who benefits from this book? If you are a practitioner of the Liechtanauer school, then the answer is obvious. If you are a practitioner of a different school of longsword, this is a perfect way to get a broad understanding of how this system works. If you are a sword enthusiast, reenactor, historian or collector, you will undoubtedly find the book a great read. If I had to recommend a book that wasn't a primary source for an example of what a Western martial art should look like, this would be the book.

Excellent Rare Insights

This is an excellent analysis of modern (post-modern) middle-class liberal thought processes. As Shannon Sullivan points out, these four major categories of distancing oneself from toxic portions of American history are unconscious. More importantly, making these items conscious such that we can cast light on the darkness of "colorblind" approaches demands that we face the issues so as to grow (hopefully) towards a less racist society. Ms. Sullivan's candor and precise--sometimes cutting-- observances are admirably displayed with humility. I am thrilled to discover such an esoteric and intellectual writer who is simultaneously contributing to a field (critical race theory) which has the potential to make such tangible differences in our lives.

This book is amazing. I teach in a masters program in higher education at Penn State and Love this book. Sullivan is spot on. My students who read it were angered and challenged by it, and they loved it!

Short and steamy

I give this 4.5 stars, but rounded up since I don't have access to half stars!

This is a short story that stands on its own, while it leads us into a series, The Hathaway Heirs by Suzanna Medeiros.

There is a lot of STEAM in this one. Miranda married well twelve years ago. Well, but not all that happily. Her family wished her to have a title and wealth, so they insisted that she marry Viscount Hathaway. But she's never forgotten the man who also courted her and touched her heart, Andrew, the Earl of Sanderson. After the death of her husband, for the first time, Miranda decides that she wants to grab hold of happiness with both hands, even though she only gives herself three weeks to enjoy it. That is, if Drew will have her for that time period.

Andrew has never forgotten the woman who walked away from his heart. When she makes a very scandalous proposal, he jumps at the chance, thinking that spending some intimate time withe her will finally bring closure to their relationship.

Such silly people! All the time they spend together just brings their hearts closer. But, of course, neither one can let the other know. Miranda lies to him about why she wants to be intimate and he never tells her how she had touched his heart all those years ago and that the feelings are returning by leaps and bounds.

For a short story, there was enough story here for me. There's lots of hot times, but I could feel their emotions, too. Well done, Ms. Medeiros! I'm taking half a bookmark away for a bit of repetitive narrative.

At the end of this one, we meet the heir to the Hathaway fortune and title. He and his new bride do not seem to be very happy. Their story is number two in the series, and I hope it comes available soon!

Much better than preview would make you expect....

It is interesting that I actually passed over this book several times because the blurb quite frankly didn't appeal, really just how tawdy you weren't good enough for me to marry but how about a roll in the hay! But....the book is much better than it sounds. Has a much better and more complicated storyline than first appearance and I can really see some young girl making all the mistakes that this one did. I thoroughly enjoyed it after I eventually bought it.

Lady Hathaway's Indecent Proposal Is Indecently Tantalizing

When I sat down to read Lady Hathaway's Indecent Proposal I was excited because it seemed like the kind of romantic/erotic book that I would actually read. I love historical fiction, especially from the Regency Period in England until the Edwardian Era. I was also surprised when I researched the book, at only .99 cents, if it was as good as I hoped, it would be a steal. And it is. Suzanna Medeiros writes well, has a good grasp of the history and really pulls the reader in with this one.

Originality: ★★★★☆
Medeiros writes about a period that has been done over and over again. But she does so in such a way that is refreshing and enlightening. She looks at a period of time through the eyes of a widow and what she wants. And Miranda wants Andrew. He is sexy, he is her age and he has everything she wants in a man. Even if she can only have it for a little while.

Character Development: ★★★★★
Miranda is complex and detailed. She has lived the life a noble woman usually did, back in those days. Unable to marry for love, forced into a situation of convenience by those around her, she had the prospect to be well off. But fate/luck reared its ugly head and she was left with the plight of a woman in the time period. Add real life concerns and an undying love for a man she wished she could have married and there you go. A perfect story.

Andrew is just as interesting. Handsome, rough and tumble, and never married. Once wonders about his back story. About that time between pairings with Miranda. But his development is so good and his complex range of emotions so real, it becomes more of an afterthought.

Editing: ★★★★★
Obviously professionally done.

The Sex: ★★★★★
When we read these stories, we want the steam. We want the romance. We want to imagine would it would be like to be in Andrew's (or Miranda's) arms. The author does that well, and her descriptions are really sexy. I loved reading these scenes and found them to be very well done.

I think .99 is way too low for such a good work and cannot wait to see more from the Hathaway Heirs Series.

About the Author

Iqbal Husain is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Akron in Ohio. He received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Texas A&M University. Dr. Husain is the founder of the Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Program at the University of Akron, which encompasses graduate and undergraduate courses, research on electric drives for electric and hybrid vehicles, and collegiate-level competitions on alternative vehicles. An IEEE Fellow, he is the recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER award, the IEEE-IAS Outstanding Young Member award, the IEEE Third Millennium Medal, the College of Engineering Outstanding Researcher Award, and the Society of Automotive Engineers Vincent Bendix Automotive Electronics Engineering Award.

Solid on Fundamentals

Dr. Husain is an Electrical Engineer, therefore his book focuses primarily on the electrical, magnetic, electromagnetic & electromechanical aspects of EV & HEV vehicle design. From this perspective, his book is very solid on fundamental EV & HEV design considerations and component analyses. However, the continuously variable transmission (CVT)... including planetary gearsets (used in CVTs to combine/split torque) is a key HEV component. Consequently, I view omitting their discussion as dissapointing. On the other hand, Dr. Husain's text is very well written/edited and his style of explaining technical details is conversational, yet professional. I recommend this book without hessitation.

Hard to follow, not much practical information

This book is very hard to follow. The author presents examples (and sometimes answers) without outlining how to solve the problems. This is very frustrating! Most of the work in the book is calculus-based which would not be a problem if the steps for deriving the equations were more explicit. The information is very theoretical with little practical relevance to electric car design. The author starts out by explaining generic vehicle mechanics and then jumps right into battery chemistry and motors. Very little effort is spent on the interrelationships between these elements. The author does a decent job describing motor fundamentals, but he does not spend much time discussing the practical limitations of the technology. The hybrid discussion is relegated to the last chapter of the book, and then only a few pages are devoted to explaining this technology. Most of the chapter is spent describing various thermodynamic cycles such as the Otto cycle and Rankine cycle. Curiously,at this point the author resorts to a very high level discussion of these cycles, using very little math to show the effects of the electric motor on the function and efficiency of the traditional ICE vehicle.

If you are a student, buy regular book since you won't be able to print anything...not even one page. I was hoping to print out pages with formulas, graphs, etc.
