Excellent book! Worked with a couple of the authors at the University of Rochester, Strong Memorial Hospital. Dr. Nayar, very good cytopathologist, but not the friendliest with whom to work. But, then again, one cannot have everything, eh? Excellent book for teaching medical students about cervical pathology.

Makes the power of RegExp accessible to everybody

This book finally fills a very important niche, since, before it, there wasn't any entry-level Regular Expression manual worth reading. Friedl's book from O'Reilly is excellent, but not suited for beginners. Ben Forta distilled the essential of the subject inside a compact, easy to follow book. Even seasoned programmers often consider the topic arcane, but the author brilliantly managed to cover it in a way that can be easily understood by everybody and still being relevant (avoiding the pitfalls so typical of "dummies" manuals). Every chapter revolves around a set of practical examples, evolving in a linear way, from the very basic up to a few more sophisticated techniques covered inside the last two chapters.
Forta covers Regular Expressions in a language and implementation agnostic way; the result is worth reading regardless of the language/platform you use. It's a small, handy manual that makes the power of Regular Expressions accessible to everybody. Heartily recommended!

Excellent gentle introduction to regular expression

Don't be fooled by the book's catchy title, obviously courtesy of Sams marketing department. Just reading through the book's 138 pages will take more than 10 minutes. But if you're willing to sit down with this book for an hour or two, you can certainly learn to write regular expressions that do what you want.

The book consist entirely of a gently paced tutorial that walks you through all the elements of the regular expression syntax, starting out with the most basic elements, advancing all the way to advanced features such as lookaround and conditionals. Each chapter introduces one element, clearly describing it, with several detailed examples. Almost all features of Perl-compatible regular expressions (also used by PHP, Python, JavaScript, Java, .NET, etc.) are discussed.

Obviously, such a small book cannot be comprehensive. Even though the book's cover mentions a variety of programming languages, the book does not tell you at all how to actually use regular expressions with particular programming languages or tools. For that, you'll need to refer to the documentation that comes with the software you're using, or check out the web site at [...]

The book also doesn't explain regular expression features such as matching Unicode characters or named capture. These features are only supported by a small number of regular expression flavors.

If you're completely new to regular expressions, Sams Teach Yourself Regular Expressions in 10 Minutes will get you up to speed quickly. I would definitely recommend you get yourself a copy. But if you're already familiar with regular expressions, you'll need to look elsewhere for in-depth information.

Great starting point for understanding and building regular expressions

I have bought and given away multiple copies of this book. Biggest advantages:
1. It is short.
2. It is cheap.
3. It is conceptual, not language-specific

If you have access to the Internet, you can easily find free tutorials and reference guides and even tools for using regular expressions. Why would you need a book!?! Because almost all of the free resources start with something like this "The period (.) matches any character. Use the backslash (\) to escape special characters" etc. etc.
But that is not teaching someone how to use regular expressions, it is just teaching syntax. Useful, but IMO not the right place to start.
I think that one needs to understand the purpose of regular expressions and how/why to use them - before getting into the arcane syntax. Another thing that the book illustrates is how to avoid matching things you *don't* want, as well as matching the things you *do* want. IMO, this kind of thinking is important but rarely taught.

If you already know regular expressions, then this is not the book for you. But if you are new to regular expressions and you like to learn by example - buy this book. It will take you more than 10 minutes. But if you work through the entire book, you will understand regular expressions better than most people.

One of Hesse's Best--A Must-Read

In many ways, this book serves as a humble yet profound companion to Siddhartha and the Glass Bead Game (whose dedication reads: "To the Journeyers to the East"). It is another of Hermann Hesse's beautiful tales of searching. The story is that of HH, a member of an apparently long-dissolved League, a League of travelers who traversed space and time to absorb the wisdom, culture, and secrets of the ages to find peace and unity. As HH tries to recount this story, he reaches a great obstacle: the unexplained disappearance of League servant. He cannot go on. The rest of the book shows how HH deals with this encumbrance, only to find out that the truth he has been searching for is simpler than he though, and it is right in front of him.
What insight Hesse had, to be able to see that endless searching can blind us to what we already know, to be able to express the often-neglected value of humility and faithful servitude. Hesse's feel for communal and individual values shines forth in this brilliantly simple story, all of 117 pages.
And so I invite you to read this short tale in the hope that you, too, will find what you are looking for.

An Entertaining Book that is Hard to Pin Down

This allegorical book is made up of equal parts poetry and prose. On the surface it tells a simple tale of a man who starts on a journey with like minded souls in search of a mystical woman named Fatima. Part way through the journey he loses faith in his fellow travelers and their cause. The rest of the book is about the protagonist's attempt to write about his experience, and to discover the true nature of the league in which he had lost faith.
Almost from the beginning the reader is forced to conclude that neither the league itself, nor the attempt to write about it, can be taken literally. Clearly Hesse wants the league of travelers to the east to be seen in a symbolic light. But what is it meant to represent? Given that this is the author of Siddhartha, one might suppose that the league represents a group of individuals in search of eastern mysticism. Yet the book says little or nothing about Buddhism, Hinduism or Islam. The league could also be taken as an allegory for the community of artists, and though there are numerous references in the book to support this point of view, it seems too shallow an interpretation to explain the entire text. For instance, there are clear and repeated references to religion, usually in a Christian context. These references belie a simple interpretation of the book as being about the life of an artist.
The book also spends considerable time wrestling with the idea of whether or not it is appropriate to attempt to use a novel as means of exorcising one's personal demons, or whether such an undertaking is fundamentally selfish. On the surface, it appears that the author of the book denies the value of using writing as a means of working through a personal problem, and yet on one level the text clearly appears to be an attempt by the author to do exactly that. In this case, I am referring to the struggles for freedom by the fictional author of the text HH, and not to Hesse himself. But once again, it is not clear whether we are meant to take HH as Hermann Hesse or as simply an allegorical figure.
Over and over again, the text leads us up to the door of a seemingly clear allegory or metaphor, only to send us back search of a more satisfying interpretation. In writing this review, I have no intention of trying to resolve any of these paradoxes. Rather, I simply want to draw attention to them. The great joy of this book is that it tells an enjoyable tale that can be interpreted in many different ways. These mysteries at the heart of the text make the book more interesting.
There is, however, one important part of the book that is quite easy to understand. Fearful of spoiling the plot, I will simply point out that the most powerful character in the book is a servant. The idea that the humblest character in the book is also the most important has clear Christian overtones. However, seeing this character simply as a Christ figure is again perhaps too simplistic an interpretation. Certainly that is one viable level of meaning in the text, but the character also seems to represent a general endorsement of humility for both spiritual seekers and artists.
Noting some of the other reviews here, I would like to add that reading this book as a commentary on the Rosicrucians is almost certainly much too simplistic an interpretation. The Journey to the East is a poetic work, and should not be read so literally. Secondly, I want to agree with the reviewer who was surprised to find that Hesse's work was not as jejune or adolescent as he expected. Even in the old editions that we read in the sixties, the text was accompanied on the back by endorsements from Thomas Mann and T. S. Eliot. Hesse lives up to the kudos that he received from his great contemporaries. I believe that Hesse will still be read long after many of our more famous and highly praised contemporary writers are forgotten.

a must read!!!

Phillipa a lil 12 yr old girl goes to heaven again (this is her second book) where she is given many end time revelations. Jesus comes to this child and takes her to heaven he shows her mansion and things he has prepared for the saints, things such as are favorite foods, anything we desire like different colors or having your house painted gold. Her mansion and the way she describes it is a dream you would have to get the book and see for urself. There are special gifts waiting and he lavious this little girl because of her dedication to him and sharing the gospel and spreading the divine end time revelations. There are many surprises, fine things beyond ure imagination and the way she describes the joy and love and peace and her enthusium. Most of all she expresses how much Jesus loves us.

You guys Jesus is handsome she says he is beyond compare I always wonder how he looked which was conforting altho if he wasnt handsome it wouldnt mean I wouldnt love him because, he died for us but it was just something interesting to know. He is so loving and really delicate and sweet towards her I see why the mysterious are hidden from un child like people. There are animals up there and they talk and that heaven is so wonderful that even the animals said to do the best you can to make it up there and Phillipa said even the floor in heaven is better to be on than on the earth! I was like wow it is making me wish to be just even on the ground in heaven let alone just being with Jesus. The way she goes to heaven in chariots, by angles and how the angles are always surrounded by her and the love Jesus has.. The food is prepared for us the way we want it in our heavenly refridgator shows how close it is for the coming rapture. Also you get a laptop up there and will be able to chat, it just makes me wonder what else all is up there and how gracious God is. Its a must read

Love the book

Love the book, just wish there would have been a hard cover available. I got a break in the binding as soon as I opened it enough to check out a veve. Wonderful book, just crossing my fingers that the binding on the soft cover holds up.

Looking for a book of Ve-Ve?

I being a bit of a symboligist and I'm always looking for books on the subject. And if you have the same interest and are looking for a book on Voudou with almost every Ve-Ve you'll ever want. This is the book for you. Rigaud explains all the different parts of a Ve-Ve and their meaning. This book is also trilingual. Meaning it's in English, French and Spanish. And is not a book for amateurs who's only exposure to Voudou is what they've seen in movies. Definitely a mystic esoteric look at the subject

A a great start

If you want to start (from scratch) to learn to use R for data manipulation and graphics get this book. The authors say, in the forward, that it was designed to support a 3 day (8 hour per day) introduction to the R language without teaching statistics and it does a fabulous job. It covers R data types and data manipulation nearly as well as my favorite book on the topic Data Manipulation with R (Use R) but it also does a good job covering basic plots (all the typical one or two variable plots) out to intermediate graphics (making a lattice with lots of pictures) (a good next step for graphics is Data Analysis and Graphics Using R: An Example-based Approach (Cambridge Series in Statistical and Probabilistic Mathematics)) and also gives a very accessible introduction to applying functions to sets of variables and the R version of looping.

The organization and flow are excellent. Each chapter has many exercises and as you read their are pointers saying to go try the corresponding problems. There is no answer key for the problems but they are so closely tied to the material that should not be a major issue.

The index is okay but not good because there are functions used in the body of the book that are not indexed and it is missing an overall summary index/table that covers all the functions.

If the publisher will clean up the indexing, so that it is easier to return and find the information in the book, it is a solid 5 star product. Another possible complaint is that it is very expensive for a 200 page paperback but the quality of the writing offsets for the bloated price.

A great introduction to a powerful program

As the previous poster noted, if you are new to R, and especially if you are new to programming, this is the book for you. R is a very powerful statistical language with a steep learning curve if you attempt to master it on your own. For those who are used to black-box statistical programs, R can be intimidating since the user must enter syntax rather than relying on point-and-click programs.

The authors' experience in teaching R to all levels of users shines throughout this informative and friendly handbook. They show how to perform routine statistical tasks in a step-by-step format, describing common mistakes and remedies which alone are worth the price of the book.

I strongly advise that newcomers to R take an afternoon to work systematically through the book rather than treating it like a set of recipes for programming to pick through as needed. This approach will build confidence and competence, and will save considerable time when work is due. I wish I had had this book when I first encountered R, and even after years of use, I found more efficient methods in this book than ones I had picked up along the way. Excellent.

R-rrghhhh!

I agree with the "Frustrating" review. This book and its accompanying files on the website definitely need some work. For being so pricey, I expected a more clearly written and edited text. I mean,it does say, "Beginner's Guide...," right?

For example, the section on Setting the Working Directory on page 21 did not make sense to me until I figured out from other sources how and why you need to set a directory. I am, after all, a beginner!

Some explanations end with a comment such as, "The reader can search the help files by typing ?.... " As I found out, these help files are NOT for beginners.

Then there is the lack of editing. First, there are simple mistakes. Page 21: date instead of data; page 61: "you can put spaces between the $ sign and the variable (and then they show you an example with no spaces!); page 82: str(Deer) is shown with the same output as names(Deer); page 90: ...In Chapter 2, we... should be .. In Chapter 3; on the same page, "forpch" should read "for pch"; page 99: ...asterisk in the chapter title.. (there isn't one); page 111: 4:24 should be 5:24; page 112: "X1 equals 1" should be "X1 equals 0"; page 116: "Zero" should be "Zeros"; page 117: explanatory should be environmental; page 117 again: The summation appears to run from i to m, but should be a sum over j from 1 to m; etc, etc, etc--you get the idea.

Then there is just rambling on about which functions support the data option on page 60. Very confusing for novices (yours truly). As another example, in the section on Recoding Categorical Variables on page 71, the output of Squid$fSex is the same as the output of Squid$Sex, except that it shows the Levels 1 and 2. So why not use the unique function they gave earlier? Further on, they say the output is shorter using predefined nominal variables, but the outputs from the examples using summary M1 vs M2 are almost identical! And the later comment that, "Releveling is also useful for conducting a posthoc test in linear regression," is not exactly a "statistics-free" explanation.

While is useful that they publish the answers to all of the end-of-chapter exercises, many of the answers are prefaced with, "Once you have read a later chapter, it will be much easier to do it this other way...."

In addition,some of the files supplied at the website won't work as written, which the authors admit in the Answer File. For example, Section 3.7 Exercise 1. Were they in that much of a hurry to get things to press? In the solution they give to this same exercise, they suggest using read.csv to read data files in, but in the book there is no mention of the read.csv function.

Further along (Chapter 6), the section on Functions is baffling. They suggest doing Exercise 2 on page 109 "to guide you through the R code....," but the ifelse function they say to use in that Exercise is not introduced until page 117! Really!? When you need a decent explanation, it's not there. For example, on page 121, in the code that calculates "prop." It appears that prop takes the 45x75 matrix Species and divides each of the j elements in the ith row by the corresponding ith element of the 45-element column matrix RS. Not exactly intuitive, and an explanation would definitely be helpful.

I understand some frustration is a normal part of learning, but for over fifty bucks you expect a better product, especially in a "beginner's guide."
