When Isaac is born, the family is confronted with the fact that he has Down Syndrome. Emma's father explains that Isaac will still be able to do all of the things that Emma has thought of; he will just do them at a slower pace. The story ends on a high note with an excited Emma and her father visiting Isaac and her mother in the hospital. A well-thought-out question-and-answer section completes this bibliotherapeutic title. Although the artwork lacks the warmth of the text and Emma's skin tone and hair color are inconsistently portrayed, this is an appropriate title for parenting collections or as an additional purchase for children's collections.

Ages 4^-7. What starts as a regular new-baby story takes an unexpected twist. The young redheaded narrator is at first displeased with the idea of a new sibling but then has lots of ideas about what they might do together. She will take the baby to her grandfather's farm and feed the calves. Her father says they can do that when the baby is older. She will teach the baby to paint. Her father says they can do that when the baby is older. She will take the baby to Africa on a photo safari. Her father says fine, but only if he can go, too. After the girl and her father are finished talking, she says, "We'd thought of at least a million things my new brother or sister could do with me." Then, Father comes home with the news that baby Isaac has been born with Down syndrome. Her father is upset, but as the girl asks her questions all over again, they both see that although it may take a little longer and require more patience, they can't find one of those million things that Isaac won't be able to do with their help. The fine text gets right to a child's level of understanding, and the positive messages of acceptance and helping may best be understood by children this age. An appended question-and-answer spread, written at a child's level, tells what Down syndrome is, why some babies have it, and why parents may feel sad when the baby is born. Ink-and-watercolor pictures, while not expertly executed, do exude a warm feeling that matches the story. Although the book skirts some issues that Isaac may face (e.g., intolerance, illness), this is a thoughtful, focused book that will be of enormous help to families with Down syndrome children. An Insightful Story Simply Told

I originally purchased We'll Paint the Octopus Red to help me explain Down Syndrome to my older daughter when my younger daughter was born: the whys and how comes the little one needed more attention. The story is simply told. The only child will now become an older child. She and her younger sibling will have so much fun together, her dad advises. But on the day that the baby is born, the dad is sad and tells his daughter that the baby has Down Syndrome. The daughter, in her innocence, carefully reviews all the plans that her dad said she could do with her baby brother. After each example, the dad advises that they could still do the activity with a little patience. Slowly, the daughter teaches the dad and the reader that children with Down Syndrome can do almost anything with love, patience, understanding and the opportunity to try. The book not only gave guidance to my husband and me, but also was helpful in breaking down old stereotypes and ideas held by our parents.

Best book for this age group

Six year old Emma isn't very happy about the idea of having a new brother or sister but when Emma and her dad start thinking of all the things that they can do with the new baby, Emma becomes excited at the prospect of being a big sister. When her dad comes home and tells Emma that her new brother, Isaac, has Down syndrome, Emma worries that he won't be able to do any of the fun things that she has imagined. As Emma and her dad think back over all the things they wanted to do with the new baby, they realize together that as long as they are patient and helped him when he needed it, there wasn't anything he couldn't do. This is a reassuring story for young children bewildered by Down syndrome and what it means for their relationship with their new sibling. This is truly a wonderful story. Your child will ask you why you are crying after you read it to them. Of all the books for this age group, this book is by far the best.

They say no mourners, but I'm mourning. I'm mourning that this duology is over. I adored the first book, but the with the addition of the second, the two paired go up in my list of ABSOLUTE PERFECT BOOKS EVAR (which, Ima be honest with you, is kind of hard to get into. The Raven Boys is in there. Harry Potter is in there. You know what's not? The Hunger Games trilogy or even the author's first set of work, the Grisha Trilogy. SCANDALOUS)

This was so delicious. It was. Fulfilling, never disappointing, it whetted my appetite for a last job/heist story and satisfied with the level of a Shawshank Redemption-style smack down. It gave me spine-shiveringly-fingers-grazing-slightly-hungrily romantic moments, sweet first love moments, hungry lip-devouring moments. It gave me moments where I wanted to fist pump the hell out of every character, and then clutch them to my chest.and make soothing crooning moments.I read the entire thing in 6 hours. Then I re-read the ending. Multiple times. Tears and shivers and laughing and crying all at the same time. Every time.

I CANNOT ENUNCIATE ENOUGH MY APPRECIATION FOR THIS BOOK. I literally gasped at the presentation of one character who I didn't see coming (literally or figuratively) but was so delighted at the brilliance of the author's move. Everything fit. A perfect puzzle of a story that comes to the most resounding satisfying snap at the ending. I AM NOT KIDDING. BUY THIS BOOK. Actually, buy Six of Crows first, devour that (if you have't) and then BUY THIS BOOK. And if you're like me, voraciously devour it. Then as soon as you hit the ending, immediately go back and start re-reading, because you know you've missed details the first time around because the pacing of the story wouldn't allow you to slow down and appreciate the nuances. That's what 2nd readings are for. And 3rd. AND CAN I GET A HALLELUJAH FOR NO LOVE TRIANGLES?!!!?!!?! (THAT didn't count. IT doesn't count. I'm not counting IT.)

Thank you Leigh Bardugo, for this duology. Thank you for adding to my miserly BEST READS EVAR pile. Thank you for Kaz, Inej, Jesper, Wylan, Nina, Matthias, Sprecht, Rotty and every other brilliant character you've made so readable and loveable/hateable.

Although, could someone please help me out? Most of the lands are pretty obviously references to real life places. Can I get an assist on Novyi Zem? I know I should be able to figure it out - I feel like it staring at me RIGHT IN THE FACE, not mad, just....disappointed.

Underwhelming. Uneven pacing and little character growth.

Crooked Kingdom was the book I was most looking forward to reading this year. The depth and edge-of-your-seat suspense that Leigh Bardugo delivered in Six of Crows was nearly absent in Crooked Kingdom. Uneven pacing and lack of character growth was Crooked Kingdom's downfall.

Kaz and the dearly beloved gang of misfits are back in Crooked Kingdom minus one of their own. After they band together to claim back their missing member, they scheme to take down the Barrel's crooked businessmen, Jan Van Eck and Pekka Rollins. But outsmarting these ruthless men isn't easy when their plans are thwarted at every turn.

Until this book, all of Leigh Bardugo's novel had exquisitely paced and beautifully crafted story arcs with fully developed and fully realized characters. I really wanted to love this book as much as I have loved her previous novels, but I couldn't because it was just not good. I have so many things I want to say to explain my feelings, I don't even know where to start. I'm going to point out some of the bigger problems I have.

Uneven pacing and lack of plot cohesiveness

Crooked Kingdom took a long time to get going. While it was fun to be back in the lives of a cast of characters I've grown immensely fond of, it took more than a third of the book to pass before things got interesting. Even as I read further in the book, there was very little plot action that I could grasp on to and get excited about.

In the last book, the focus was on breaking into an impenetrable prison, a plot point that lends itself to some pretty exciting stuff. There was a clear path and goal in the distance for the reader to see that was suspenseful and there was a sense that it was building to something great.

If Crooked Kingdom were a pair of pants, they would be made of several patches of mismatched pieced-together fabric. There was no tangible objective in mind. In fact, the plot here felt very piecemeal and patched together. As soon as the gang would achieve one goal, they were onto something else. It felt very unnatural and had a feel of "and then we're doing this and then we're doing this and then we're doing this" rather than "we are doing this to achieve this final goal" (which was what Six of Crows felt like). The whole book felt very unfocused and scattered: Is messing with the sugar the goal? The auction? The ships coming to and from the port? The moth-people Shu?

Transitions were jarring

The chapter transitions and shifts in point of view in Six of Crows flowed beautifully and were virtually seamless. They felt natural and were conducive to the story's thrilling nature. The same cannot be said of the transitions in Crooked Kingdom. With each chapter change it was like the plot would take one step forward and two steps back. These shifts often would go back in time and then lead the reader back to where the previous chapter left off. This only served to stall the plot more and felt incredibly jarring.

The multiple plot conveniences were really annoying.

Kaz's modus operandi is never revealing his whole plan to anyone, feeding details to his gang on a need-to-know basis. He was constantly one step ahead of his gang and his enemies. But it got really old really fast when he was winning and pulling one over on everyone every single time. It was especially irritating when these grandiose plans seemed to be written in after the fact, serving merely as plot conveniences. It just amounted to lazy storytelling. Others may have found these revelations to be wonderful "plot twists," but it only made me more frustrated with the direction of the story.

Kaz's character shows little vulnerability or weakness

Kaz's character is one of the highlights of this duology. Bardugo crafted his character with so much depth and room for change and growth. Outside of his vulnerability around Inej, he was invincible and it didn't make him seem like a real person.

I don't know how many of you watch The Walking Dead, but I was hoping for a Rick/Negan moment where Kaz is just stripped bare of his arrogance and sure-footedness. I thought for sure there would be a scene in this book where one of Kaz's plans and cons would go terribly wrong, where he didn't have a plan. But that never happened, which was disappointing.

Lack of tension and character development

In Six of Crows, Bardugo had so much to build on and work with, like introducing the reader to the characters, developing them and crafting the complicated relationships. There was so much wonderful tension that moved the plot forward with great characters, outside of the prison break-in plotline. There was very little development of these characters in Crooked Kingdom, aside from what was already accomplished in the previous book.

The tension between Nina and Matthias was gone because they were together now, so some new tension needed to be manufactured. Cue Nina's drug addict storyline. Her struggles with jurda parem only appeared when it was convenient and she was magically okay in other moments. To drum up some more tension between these two, the author really played up Matthias's rigid adherence to following the rules of his country, but it felt forced.

Focus on uninteresting characters

Personally, out of all the characters in Six of Crows, Jesper and Wylan were my least favorite. I didn't dislike them, but I didn't feel like they were as compelling. Outside of what we already knew, I wasn't interested in spending much time with them outside of what was necessary to move the plot forward in Crooked Kingdom.

But what we got in this book was a lot of page time with both of them. The budding attraction between Jesper and Wylan was something Bardugo took and ran with in this book. But I felt nothing between them. Their chapters were so long and frequent that I just became bored.

The one-liners: Can you not?

I love good banter and humor. That's one of the things I loved about Sturmhond in Siege and Storm : he was the comedic relief in the midst of danger and possible death. But the constant quipping and zingers spewing from Kaz and Jesper quickly became monotonous and not funny.

If Jesper making Wylan blush were a drinking game, I'd be blacked-out drunk by 45%. Also, there was a scene towards the end of the book that was meant to be incredibly emotional, yet Nina is making jokes? No, just no.

The way things ended...

I really didn't like the way the book ended. This is the final book in the duology and the author chose to end it through the eyes of a character the reader doesn't like. I wish we could have gotten more finality with one of our beloved Dregs but Pekka Rollins? No, thank you.

Final thoughts

There were some enjoyable moments peppered throughout the book. The bathroom scene with Kaz is arguably the best scene in the whole book, heavy with feeling and so many unspoken words. I also really liked the Inej chapter in the beginning where she ponders her value to Kaz. But these few moments weren't enough to get me to where I could say, "I liked this book."

Many readers may have enjoyed the cameos from characters from the Grisha trilogy. But really, they served little purpose to the overall story and felt like the author was just trying to win over readers' favor.

I've been very vocal about my genuine enthusiasm over this release. I kept my expectations in check. But considering I've read and loved her four previous novels, I truly thought I would enjoy this book. Crooked Kingdom wasn't the worst book ever; it just wasn't good. I hold Leigh Bardugo to a very high standard, as I've seen what she's capable of. She's an immensely gifted writer and storyteller. Crooked Kingdom was a far cry from what it could have been, and I'm so sad!

Audiobook Comments:

I switched back and forth between the book and the audiobook. I listened to the audiobook for probably the last third. Since I found this book to be extremely slow, the narrators' performances made me feel a little more interested in the book. Elizabeth Evans's narration of Nina's chapters was exceptional, my favorite of all the narrators. I didn't like the narrator for Wylan at all, and his voice for Kaz was almost laughable.

"A Battle for Revenge and Redemption"

First of all, if you’re reading this review and you haven’t read Six of Crows, go read that immediately.

Opening this book and starting to read was like seeing a friend you haven’t seen in a while. I did a reread of Six of Crows a few weeks ago and I remembered just how much I loved every single one of the characters. The character development in this book was absolutely phenomenal. The characters questioned what they thought they knew about themselves and their limitations and each of them grew an enormous amount this book. Some of the moments were absolutely heartbreaking and some made me smile.

Even though this is a fantasy series, there are many parallels between the problems experienced by the characters and real-life. Leigh Bardugo addresses everything from a change in faith, whether in a god or a loved one, to mental illness to physical disabilities. Part of what makes her characters so incredible is that, even though they have these fantastical skills, they are ultimately relatable as human beings. It’s incredibly rare that I’m unable to pick a favorite character in a book but after reading Crooked Kingdom, I can’t pick any one character in the crew (except Kuwei, I’m not a huge fan of his) as my favorite. The crew is a family and each character brings something crucial to the group and to the story.

As for the plot itself, just wow. Hold on tight, you’re in for a wild ride. If you enjoyed the heist aspect of Six of Crows, this book is essentially how the team pulled off the ultimate con. I was constantly guessing and in suspense as to what the next move would be. While Six of Crows was more focused on action, this book was more about getting into the mind of your enemy. Seeing everything unfold was like seeing two chess masters face off, albeit with a lot more tension and suspense.

I cannot recommend this book enough. I’m not quite ready to say goodbye to these characters and their world just yet so I’ll be hoping for more novels from Leigh Bardugo in the future. I’ll leave you with a quote from the book that I believe sums up the duology perfectly while demonstrating the difference between this series and the original Grisha trilogy.

When I was a girl almost every town in New England of any size had a donut shop, each with their own specialties, and what donuts those were! Nora's Bakery turned out the most stunning cream filled donut - square, with just the teeniest dusting of powdered sugar. Adam's Donuts produced both apple and cherry filled donuts. Some days you had to choose. A donut shop I no longer remember the name of out in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, was famous for their Boston Cream Donuts, which they claimed to have invented. And of course there were hundreds more. But then came the national chain and slowly but surely all of those donut shops went out of business. At first all the chain-store donuts - dozens of varieties - were made right in the store, fresh every four hours, and you could stand at a window and watch them being made. Over the years, though, the donuts were made just once a day, then only at certain centralized shops for several chain donut stores. These days who knows when those chain-store donuts were made - or where. The last box I stopped for cost most of a $10 bill and every one of them was stale, so I was delighted to see Top Pot Hand-Forged Doughnuts: Secrets and Recipes for the Home Baker and couldn't wait to order it. As luck would have it, the book arrived on the very same day that I fetched home a great big bag of the very first of this year's crop of New England apples.

If I do have one quibble with this book - and I do - it is that I had to spend a good hour or so hunting for my reading glasses in order to read the directions, but the results I had were well worth the hunt. As I sit here typing at 6:30 in the morning, I'm munching on the most luscious Apple Fritter I've had in years - straight from my own kitchen, courtesy of Hand-Forged Doughnuts. This is one of the two most "complicated" recipes in the book and it was as easy as 1-2-3. I will admit I made some substitutions. I was out of mace, so I used nutmeg. And here in New England we think Maple goes with everything, especially apples and pumpkin, so I used real Vermont Maple syrup in the glaze rather than corn syrup - I try pretty hard to avoid corn syrup. The results are STUNNING! I wish I had a camera handy to show you a picture. Better yet, you should smell them - or taste them. Best donuts, doughnuts - however you spell them - I have had in years and years. I've already had requests for a delivery of those Apple Fritters. Unfortunately, they are half gone, so I guess I'll have to make another batch!

If you love doughnuts, grab yourself a copy of Top Pot Hand-Forged Doughnuts: Secrets and Recipes for the Home Baker. You may not turn out two dozen varieties a day, but your donuts will be scrumptious!

Highly recommended, despite the fine print!

A Few Notes:

You'll find recipes for two dozen varieties of donut, plus a few extras like Doughnut Bread Pudding, Baked Raised Doughnuts and even a couple of varieties Gluten Free Doughnuts and of course a wide variety of frostings and glazes. Each recipe makes one dozen donuts.

The authors state that the recipes for cake and old-fashioned varieties of donut are easily doubled but not the raised ones. I would take exception to the later statement. I had no problem handling a single batch of the Apple Fritters, a raised donut, with my Cuisinart HM-70 Power Advantage 7-Speed Hand Mixer, Stainless and White and could have easily doubled or even tripled the batch with my 6 quart Kitchen Aid. I would suggest that you consider the size and power of your mixer when deciding whether you can double a batch.

Ateco makes some of the sturdiest cutters around, some of which have been in my kitchen for more than 40 years. You might want to pick up both the Ateco 3-1/2-Inch Stainless Steel Doughnut Cutter and the Ateco 2-1/2-Inch Stainless Steel Doughnut Cutter mini while you're shopping. a big disappointment from a vision standpoint

I've waited a month to write this review because I wasn't sure how I wanted to do it. What does a recipe book review look like? Is it strictly the quality of the recipes, or do aesthetics count, too? I bought this book for one recipe only - the old fashioned doughnut. I love those from the doughnut shops, and I thought it would be wonderful to be able to make my own. All the other recipes would be a bonus.

However, upon receipt of the book, I found that the type is in a pale gray ink, in a small point font. I am what some people would call elderly (I don't quite feel that way, however) and wear reading glasses. To try to read the recipe I also got a magnifying glass and stood under the brighest light I could find. The fractions were impossible for me to read clearly and that may be why that recipe for old fashioned doughnuts didn't turn out very well.

I haven't tried another recipe because I can't read them. I just don't understand why publishers sacrifice function for form. What's wrong with black ink and a larger font? I've thought seriously about photocopying it enlarged to about 150%; perhaps then it would be legible.

If you have excellent vision then you may be able to make outstanding doughnuts from this book. As published, I can't.

Great Doughnuts and a lot less trouble than you think

The recipes in this book are great. I have made one of each type of doughnut in the book and each have been different and delicious. If you are not already aware, these are the Starbucks doughnuts. Or, more specifically, the Old Fashioned doughnut in this book is the same recipe as Starbucks glazed doughnut (and the book mentions that they make doughnuts for Starbucks). But that is as far as the comparison goes because a fresh hot doughnut is ten times better and more enjoyable than something sitting behind a glass cabinet for a day. In fact, that is really what this book is all about-the difference between eating a doughnut that is fresh and hot from the oil, glaze still dripping down the sides and one that has been sitting in a case in a store for some unknown amount of time. If you have access to a doughnut shop where you can reliably get a doughnut that is fresh and warm from the fryer then you may not find homemade doughnuts worth your time. But if you have no idea what I am talking about in terms of warm doughnut and are willing to invest a little time, then homemade doughnuts are worth it.

The book emphasizes three basic kinds of doughnuts, and I have made all three: (a) cake doughnuts, (b) yeast raised doughnuts (a traditional glazed), (c) old fashioned doughnuts (the Starbucks doughnut). It then offers a bunch of variations on each theme. Cake doughnut variations include different flavorings for the doughnut itself, including chocolate, spicy, coconut, lemon, etc. plus a variety of topping suggestions. Yeast/traditional glazed include different shapes and also apple fritters. Old fashioned include different topping ideas.

Here are my thoughts after having made cake doughnuts, glazed yeast doughnuts, apple fritters, and old fashioned.
1. Overall there are a few tweaks to each recipe that are worth keeping in mind. First, the Ateco doughnut cutters sold on Amazon don't match the sizes recommended in the book. If you buy the 2.5" cutter, doughnuts are smaller than the book recommends, so the cook a little faster and make a few more than the recipe indicates. You can use biscuit cutters to make a larger size doughnut, its really not a big deal.
2. You must have a thermometer for oil temp. Different doughnuts in the book cook at different temps. A $10 thermometer is key.
3. The recipes are surprisingly easy and involve little work to make the dough. Each dough can be made in 15 minutes or so. And each dough can go in the fridge overnight, making an early morning doughnut much easier to get ready. In total, I typically spent 15 minutes making dough, then into a bowl and into the fridge. The next morning, while the oil heats (about 20-30minutes heating over medium), I roll out the dough and cut the doughnuts. Then 10-15 min to fry the whole batch, doing 2-4 doughnuts at a time. Then a couple minutes to glaze, often while the next batch is cooking. And its done.4. There are a few tips and tricks to make things a little easier that are not covered in the book.
5. The single hardest part of making doughnuts is getting the doughnuts into the oil without damaging their shape.

Cake doughnut observations:
The cake doughnut batter is the softest and stickiest in the book. It *almost* pours. This makes cutting this doughnuts and getting them into the oil really difficult. Use lots of flour on the counter, on the dough, on the cutter. Lots of flour! don't skimp or it will stick to everything. The book suggests "shaking the flour extra flour off the doughnuts before frying but that is impossible. The raw cake doughnuts can't be picked up, the doughnuts will just fall apart. Transport the doughnuts to the oil using a spatula, metal bench scraper etc.
Here is my suggestion based on my experience - cut the doughnuts then shake the cut doughnut out of the cutter right onto your spatula and then put directly into the oil rather than precutting all the doughnuts. Get a couple of spatulas and/or a helper but this way avoids having the doughnuts fall apart or get squished from too much handling.

Yeast doughnut and apple fritters.
These doughnuts rise massively on their second rise so give them tons of space on the cookie sheets. In fact, I recommend using 3 sheets or as many as will fit in your oven (the proofing box) so that you don't have crowding. They recommend cutting the doughnuts and doing a second rising on a floured cookie sheet but I found the flour did not stop the doughnuts from sticking to the cookie sheet. In the process of scraping the doughnut off the cookie sheet, it deflated like a popped balloon. Now, they doughnuts did "reinflate" in the oil but still, it was depressing to fight to get the doughnuts off the cookie sheet and watch them shrivel up and collapse.
My fix (which I later used on the apple fritters) is this:
Cut parchment paper squares, about 4x4 or 5x5 or so. When you cut each doughnut or apple fritter for its second rise, place it on its own square of parchment paper with a bit of flour underneath. Then when its time to move doughnuts from the cookie sheets into the hot oil, just slide parchment paper onto your hand and carefully invert the doughnut into the oil or onto your spatula and then into the oil. This avoids scraping doughnuts that are stuck to the cookie sheet. If it sticks to the parchment, you can peel the paper away from the inverted doughnut, which does not deflate them as badly.
This worked great.

Old fashioned. These were a lot easier to keep form after cutting. The dough is stiffer than the others but less sticky. I was able to cut and transfer doughnuts much easier than the other kinds of doughnuts.

A word on glazes and icings. The recipe is simple and literally take a minute to make. You must sift the sugar! I put a metal wire mesh strainer inside a mixing bowl and put it on the scale. Then I weigh the sugar into the strainer and then, once weighed, just sift it right into the bowl below by tapping the wire strainer agains the sides of the bowl.

Most important, the glaze is warm and goes on warm doughnuts, meaning that you can eat a warm doughnut with warm glaze just minutes after it cooks. This for me was the the whole point!
But for icings, they suggest letting the doughnuts cool and the icing stay warm. My experience was that the icing needed to cool some too. Hot icing even on a cooled doughnut just ran down the sides like a glaze. But when I let the icing cool and stiffen up a bit then it tended to sit on top and not melt down the sides. Its easy to rewarm the icing if it gets too thick. And their glaze and icing recipes make plenty for each batch. The downer is that the doughnut is cool for icing purposes and I really like them hot. But they were still worlds better than anything at the store.

My favorite was the apple fritters. Very easy to make, very easy to shape. The apples help the fritters keep their form. Taste was superb and you can eat them warm. Wow! This experience alone is worth the book.

Overall, if you are comfortable with deep frying, then homemade doughnuts are simply not that much work for a great end result.

Hope Otis is on the level

It is a good argument for different tracks benefiting from certain drillings. I just wonder if they truly are better for specific track players. And I wonder if the fact that my 1960 hard rubber spare ball that tracks one inch from the fingers and thumb make me a high track player. All my reactive balls track 3 inches from the fingers and 1 inch from the thumb.

Great book

I read Perceptive Bowling when I was just learning about fitting and drilling bowling balls over 30 years ago, it gave me a different way of looking at the hand etc. This book gives me a different perspective on the layout of the ball for different bowlers.
Definitely worth a read.

Canadians will be smug

The comparison is a great idea for a book, carried out fairly well. The focus is mostly the 1810-1890 and in the US, almost entirely the West. This is a bit misleading because the Indian wars in the East ran from the early 1600s through the early 1800s, and included quite high casualties on both sides, as in the disaster Indians inflicted on St Clair's army in the 1790s. This is an issue because for all their epic quality, the wars in the West were smaller in scale and cost fewer soldier's lives.

Such events in Canada are described as smaller in scale and much less violent--again the time frame alters perceptions, because French Canada used Indian allies in warring with the British colonies, and the scope of those wars included chunks of Canada. The book is a narrative of campaigns and contexts, and has fewer of the character sketches and subplots that are typical in current history writing.

By far the bloodiest were in Mexico. The Caste War in the Yucatan (1848-1900) may have consumed 200,000 lives, and the era of Comanche raids deep into Mexico reduced large areas to something like chaos.

I found the accounts of the US-Apache wars to be the most interesting. Overall the book is a good read, the prose fairly good. Maps are adequate. If you are Canadian, you may be a bit smug. Still, comparing violence and history this way is I think a very useful endeavor for historians.

Paintings are nice, but many with a yellow-brownish tinge and too small

I do not know if it is because of the age of the book (1996), but all paintings have a yellow-brownish tinge, maybe because of the yellow underpaintings? So sometimes I miss the other colors like blue and green or these colors are not strong enough. But the colors are not muddy and are good in contrasts. Some of the paintings are too small to see the details. This is not always because of the smaller format of the book. The paintings show mainly nice still lifes and landscapes.

GOOD TEXT BUT TOO MUCH YELLOW-ORANGE PAINT

Oil Painting for the Serious Beginner is a well thought out book for the serious or not so serious artist who would like to paint in oils. It begins with the materials used; brushes, knives, canvasses, etc. then continues on to the fundamentals; drawing, color charts, the basic palettes, etc. Chapter 3. deals with how to begin painting; subject matter, sketching in your subject, brush work and painting with a knife.

Chapters 4 and 5 deal with still lifes and landscapes. No portraits are included and the few human forms that are included are faceless. I presume the author feels that this subject matter is not for the beginner or needed to be included in another book.

Most of the work was good, however, I felt that there was not enough space being spent in the development stages of the paintings. Furthermore, his predominant use of yellow and yellow orange paints was not appealing to me. Most are dull and muddy looking. I was not impressed by most all of them. The basic text was informative and would help but not inspire a beginning artist

Just like it says: For the Serious Beginner!!

I was surprised that someone was disappointed that this one book didn't cover everything! What book does?
The fact that it doesn't even pretend to, that the author explains his palette and his technique is exactly what makes the book so valuable. It was one of the first books I bought ten years ago when I started painting, and I was so relieved to find that I could go through it, emulating his approach, mixing colors in a limited way (so that they are manageable!), etc. This book and "The Oil Painting Course You've Always Wanted" (Lechen), taught me to paint as surely as if I'd enrolled in an art school. I recommend both of them very highly. Then go to Al Gury, "Alla Prima," and Tolley, "Oil Painters Solution Book," and you've got what you need. Oh. And most recently, Carole Marine's "Daily Painter".
