This was an excellent book for going over the basics of the topics covered for the AP test and the questions' difficulty ranged from the fairly prosaic to challenging and the projects could be involving, however, it seemed to pall in comparison to Barron's AP review book when it came to depth and all the intricate technicalities/special-cases governing the Java language which the AP test partially dwells upon for its subset. This book seems to sugarcoat the topics of AB without going into much depth which I found somewhat dismaying when it came to effectively and efficiently studying for the AP test. Otherwise, it gives an effective overview of the individual topics and leaves a basic understanding of the concepts of introductory computer science: for depth and technicalities including java-level implementation(particularly hash tables), I'd look elsewhere.

(I Originally used this but found myself attracted to the more densely-packed information in Barron's AP after about 3 weeks of study in this. I was a student self-studying for the exam and needed a textbook to study the material as no instructor accessible to me taught it. Eventually, I earned a 5, though I credit that more towards Barron's than this.)

You won't find a better textbook

You won't find a better texbook to teach high school computer science. Who uses "Foo Fighters" in an example or talks about throwing away extra coffee cups to explain an inefficiency of the immutability of strings?

This book has every quality I could possibly want to teach either Intro or AP Computer Science in high school. The authors have beautifully achieved a difficult task: to write with an accessible and fun style while keeping the content complete and rigorous enough to prepare students to earn a 5 on the AP exam. The book sets students up for success by exposing them to many concepts in early chapters on object-oriented programming, but not expecting mastery until the detailed chapters on the same topics that come later. The exposure is supported with skeleton code so that students can feel confident about completing projects. When re-visiting a topic later in the book, students are well-prepared to write complex programs from scratch.

There is an abundance of paper and pencil exercises so that students think through their process before jumping to the keyboard. These exercises are particularly prevalent in the chapter on algorithms. (Finally an author that gives this topic at the heart of computer science its deserving coverage!) The exercises and programs are divided into sections of the book making it easy to break down a chapter into teaching days. The code in the PowerPoint slides are laid out and explained so well that you could practically display them without explanation as your only source for lessons. The test questions are varied in style (multiple choice, true/false, and free response) and written in tried-and-true MS Word format. The programming projects are so much fun that I hurt with envy wanting to be a student myself again. A few notable project titles include Dance Studio, Chomp Game, and Instant Messenger.

About the Author
Dennis C. Turner is Director of the Institute for Applied Ethology and Animal Psychology, Switzerland, a private faculty member of the University of Zurich (Vetsuisse Faculty) and Invited Professor at the Educational Research Center for Anthrozoology (ERCAZ), Azabu University, Japan. He has published extensively on domestic cats and is well known for his activities in international organizations concerning human-animal relationships, animal-assisted therapy and animal welfare.

Patrick Bateson FRS is Emeritus Professor of Ethology at the University of Cambridge. He is President of the Zoological Society of London and former Vice-President of the Royal Society. Wil Fleming is the Owner of Force Fitness and Performance and Athletic Revolution Bloomington, in Bloomington, Indiana. Force Fitness is one of the most successful training facilities in the Midwest with nearly 300 clients, 75 athletes earning Division I scholarships, and nearly 90 athletes moving on to compete at the NCAA Division I, II, and III levels. Wil is a national-level Olympic weightlifter (finishing 8th in the 2013 and 2014 National Championships) despite being one of the few competitors in his 30s. He is the coach of dozens of successful weightlifters ages 11-40. He is also one of the nation s youngest national-level weightlifting coaches through USAW. In addition to being a business owner, Fleming is an accompliched author. He wrote the International Conditioning Association s Olympic Lifts Instructor Course manual as well as the Speed and Agility chapter in IYCA Essentials of High School Strength and Conditioning text along with noted performance experts like Eric Cressey and Mike Robertson. Overall I like the book but if you are new to lifting you will encounter some industry jargon that you might have to look up.

Only feedback or criticism is that the book leaves intermediate lifters something to long for. I would like more information on remedies for common weightlifting mistakes. Drills that author would use to correct a certain issue etc.

Til this date the most complete book on the subject matter available is Greg Everetts book the complete guide for athlets and coaches Olympic Weightlifting.

I bought this for kindle ereader but returb=ned because it is not formatted right for an ereader. It looks like an awesome book and I'm sure in​ paperback it is but it's not good on kindle. I'm hoping it will be corrected soon so I can rebuy this book. I was looking forward to reading it but couldn't because the writing was too small.

I've taken the 2 day UK Strength and Conditioning Courses and a Welsh Weight Lifting Course and still these were fleshed out even more with this book. This book builds on everything. From start to finish Wil has been very thorough and the programs at the end are very helpful. I can't recommend this enough.

Mark Maslin is Professor of Climatology at University College London. He is currently a Royal Society Industrial Fellow. He was the former Director of the UCL Environment Institute and Head of the Department of Geography. He is science advisor to the Global Precious Commodities PLC, Global Cool Foundation, Climatecom Strategies, Steria, Permian Ltd and Carbon Sense Ltd. Great primer on the science

This is a very good introduction to climate change, and places some additional but brief focus on interdisciplinary perspectives (like economics), and includes some direct responses to positions/arguments made against the science. It provides a good broad-brush view of the science, and primarily discusses climate change from a scientific standpoint with reference to some scientific data (primarily in the form of graphs) without getting bogged down in highly technical detail (which you may choose to pursue through other sources). It acknowledges what the uncertainties in the science are, and explains why those uncertainties should not be considered indications of invalidity. As such, I would consider this book to be a fairly valuable primer on understanding the scientific perspective.

I dinged the book one star in the review for very poor editing as there are a fair number of obvious typos throughout the text.

The book is small enough to fit in a back pocket but still includes a fair amount of content. Reasonably priced in my mind.

About the Author
Bernard Bangley is a recently retired Presbyterian minister who has written for many years. Adapting truth...

Bernard Bangley does a superb job in bringing de Sales' classic works to life. Often the Christian classics can be difficult to muddle through with their archaic and out-dated language, though there is a minefield of wisdom to be had. That's where Bangley comes in. Not only does he reinterpret the works for a modern audience, but he offers these writings in a language that is accessible and understood. As someone who has tried time after time to get through many of the original (Christian classic) books only to give up by page ten, Bangley comes as a God-send! I'm grateful I, along with others, can benefit from the wisdom and heart of these writers. I look forward to reading more of Bangley's "translations" in the future.

About the Author

James MacGregor Burns is a Senior Scholar at the Academy of Leadership, University of Maryland, College Park, and Woodrow Wilson Professor Emeritus of Government at Williams College. He has written numerous books, including The Power to Lead (1984), The Vineyard of Liberty (1982), Leadership (1979), Roosevelt. The Soldier of Freedom (1970), The Deadlock of Democracy: Four-Party Politics in America (1963), and Roosevelt: The Lion and the Fox (1956). With his son, Stewart Burns, he wrote A People's Charter: The Pursuit of Rights in America (1991); with Georgia Sorenson, Dead Center: Clinton, Gore, and the Perils of Moderation (2000); and with Susan Dunn, The Three Roosevelts (2001). Burns is a past president of the American Political Science Association and winner of numerous prizes, including a Pulitzer Prize in History.

J.W. Peltason is a leading scholar on the judicial process and public law. He is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of California, Irvine. As past president of the American Council on Education, Peltason has represented higher education before Congress and state legislatures. His writings include Federal Courts in the Political Process (1955), Fifty-Eight Lonely Men: Southern Federal Judges and School Desegration (1961), and with Sue Davis, Understanding the Constitution (2000). Thomas E. Cronin is a leading student of the American presidency, leadership, and policy-making processes. He teaches at and serves as president of Whitman College. He was a White House Fellow and a White House aide and has served as president of the Western Political Science Association. His writings include The State of the Presidency (1980), U.S. v. Crime in the Streets (1981), Direct Democracy: The Politics of Initiative, Referendum, and Recall (1989), Colorado Politics and Government (1993), and The Paradoxes of the American Presidency (1998). David B. Magleby is nationally recognized for his expertise on direct democracy, voting behavior, and campaign finance. He is Professor of Political Science at Brigham Young University and has taught at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the University of Virginia. His writings include Direct Legislation (1984), The Money Chase: Congressional Campaign Finance Reform (1990), Myth of the Independent Voter (1992), and editor of Outside Money: Soft Money and Issue Advocacy in the 1998 Congressional Elections (2000). He was president of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society, and has received numerous teaching awards. In 1996 he was a Fulbright Scholar at Nuffield College, Oxford University.

David M. O'Brien is the Leone Reaves and George W. Spicer Professor at the University of Virginia. He was a Judicial Fellow and Research Associate at the Supreme Court of the United States, a Fulbright Lecturer at Oxford University, held the Fulbright Chair for Senior Scholars at the University of Bologna, and a Fulbright Researcher in Japan, as well as a Visiting Fellow at the Russell Sage Foundation. Among his publications are Storm Center: The Supreme Court in American Politics, 5th ed., (2000); a two volume casebook, Constitutional Law and Politics, 4th ed., (2000); an annual Supreme Court Watch; and To Dream of Dreams: Religious Freedom in Postwar Japan (1996). Excellent value; helped me pass the CLEP exam

A true textbook, Government By the People is not too “readable,” but it’s far from terrible. I bought it to study for my American Government CLEP exam, and it served that purpose well, although I would have preferred a Kindle version. Even if it's not the most current edition, the price was truly excellent for a textbook (and how much does American government change, anyway?). While I agree that there are subtle signs of a liberal bias on the part of the authors, it's really not that terrible and is to be expected, I suppose.

Rough looking, but gets the job done.

I rented this book for class and though it doesn't bother me personally, my copy came a bit more rough looking than anticipated. Torn pages, high-lighting, and bent/damaged cover but nothing that hinders me from using the book. I just hope they don't try to charge me for the damage. I took pics the day I got it and submitted them but never heard back so hopefully it was seen.
