This book helps you prepare to perform in the opera.

A libretti collection is not an opera-stories book for the casual listener. Rather, it is a guide to pronunciation for the singer who is learning to perform a part in an opera. Lines of the original Italian or German text are interleaved with lines written in IPA, the International Phonetic Alphabet. No music is provided, so this book must be used in conjunction with the score.

IPA, once learned, enables the singer from any background to pronounce the text as the person who wrote the IPA transliteration thinks it should be pronounced. This can be useful even to the singer with a working knowledge of the language because it can convey the class and regional dialects of the opera characters.

More valuable for the translations than the IPA

This review can be applied to the complete catalog of Nico Castel's Opera Libretti. I happen to own most of them and have found them extremely useful as a teacher of voice and as a director of opera. The hard cover linen bindings are Smyth-Sewn, rather than glued, so you can expect a lifetime of use. They are printed on bright white paper which is easy to read. They reek of quality. Now to the content. For me, the word-for-word translations are invaluable. Mr. Castel has also provided idiomatic translations when the literal ones are a bit obtuse. This is very helpful. There are many voice teachers and singers out there that rely on IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) to teach/learn their texts. I must admit that I do not subscribe entirely to IPA as a sole source for pronunciation. In my opinion, while IPA does offer the student a groundwork for pronouncing the words, it does not offer the means to learn the correct inflection that must be mastered if one wishes to really become a master communicator in foreign languages. So, I believe it is advisable that a singer move beyond IPA and work with a coach that has expertise in the foreign languages. Many thanks to Nico Castel for the immense labor of love that these volumes must have cost him. They truly belong in every vocal pedagogue's library.

Rivers of Gold is the first in the More series of dystopian thrillers featuring MARSOC operator Everett "Ever" More and NYPD Detective Sixto Santiago. Detective Sixto Santiago is one of these cops, who is grudgingly partnered with a newcomer named Everett More, who does not seem to be aware of any rules governing police conduct. The brutal murder of a cab driver draws them into an increasingly complex investigation that eventually gives them a lead into the gang war between the party cartels. But as the case grows seedier and more dangerous, Santiago is forced to investigate his own partner, and is shocked to discover he is part of a covert CIA operation to infiltrate the NYPD. More is no cop he is something altogether more dangerous. But he is the only one Santiago can rely upon when their case leads them to the rising stars of New York s underworld, whose connections range from immigrant cab drivers to the captains of the finance industry.

I actually read the book - and it's a fantastic debut!

I hate using "page turner" in a review. But, since I'm having trouble typing this with my left hand, I think it's appropriate. My right is sprained from the speed flipping. Dunn asks just one thing - buy the premises that he sets up. Given that, hang on all the way to the conclusion. Please read the above for an ample set-up.

In a/the New York City of a few years from now, we meet the normal group of cops and drug dealers and cab drivers. Cab drivers? Yeah, and they are the cops. Or, are they the drug dealers? Both? Dunn's NYC is based on a nominally plausible projection of today's world; but extremely unlikely to occur in my reality. Your reality may vary.

I don't think there is one character in this book that I want to actually meet (no offense to those modeled after some real and presumably very nice folks). But the characters all fit into this world - and some of them are lulus. Psychiatry as a field is secure with people like these around.

There is action throughout this book and absolutely no way to catch your breath without putting the book out of sight for a while. The pursuit of justice, or whatever, is relentless and the hero's cop partner is not to be believed - but it's healthier to do so anyway. The bad guys (and gals) are very, very bad and the good guys are very, very not necessarily much better.

If you are not offended by bad language, blood, sex (obligatory, consensual, illegal, etc), drugs (illegal, etc), blood, guns, violence, and blood - then order this one. If any one or a combination of those features disturb you, you'll miss out one heck of a good book; but you don't dare risk it. There are enough folks like me to amp up the sales.

I am astounded that this is a first book and I am glad that there is ample opportunity for this to be a series. Don't worry though, this is a complete book in itself. Keep writing, Adam.

Too Many Problems To Be Great, But What a Finish!

Rivers of Gold, by Adam Dunn, is almost believable for a futuristic police novel. Almost. My main problem accepting the premise was the time period: the future was altered too much too soon. If Dunn had chosen 2023, ten years after this novel's present, I would have far less problems believing the economic mess New York has become. Once I got over that, however, I had no trouble buying into the greed and crime culture Dunn gives us.

The novel has a slow takeoff. It seems as if the first half, almost two thirds, of the story is devoted to giving us the required history lessons, network setup and character introduction. I almost get the feeling there are more books planned for this version of NYPD. Real police work can be like that, however. Long boring surveillance and background investigations until a break finally come along. Once the story takes off, however, buckle up and hold on: it is a real action packed story.

Despite the extended introductions, some of the characters still come off as flat. Oh the central characters are fully fleshed out for us, but some important secondary players are not so well done. New York City is a multilingual city and many of these secondary characters spoke something other English. Sometime the expressions were translated and other times they were not and the meaning was not subject to being figure out through context clues. In Losers' Club, many of the characters used Hispanic slang so Richard Perez, the author, included a short glossary to help non-Spanish speakers follow what was going on. This would have been even more helpful here.

Without giving away too much of the story, I think the author did not begin hitting his stride until the end of the story. I saw the irony that various government agencies were trying to take over New York as their jurisdiction, just as the various drug cartels and other underworld factions all wanted to take over New York.

While I enjoyed the story, there were too many problems to consider this much more than average. I would expect to have more action throughout the story when dealing with a cop story about a drug cartel and features a shady mercenary plying on the same team as the good guys. I'll go maybe three and quarter stars for this, mostly because of the final action sequence. The rest is BORING.

Rivers of Gold fascinates. It is a novel that in the way that a dream is a dream only after you’ve spent half the morning convincing yourself it was just a dream. You can smell NYC with each turn of the page as Dunn’s words transport you with precision to an exact place in time. It sophisticates in that it will deprive you of any na�ve notions you may be hanging on to in regard to social structure. It is an empowering and enjoyable read. Not recommended for wimps.

Gr 2-4-Deloris Jordan tells of an episode in her famous son's childhood in which the future superstar yearned to be a better basketball player. Michael wished to be taller so that he could compete with the bigger kids, particularly one member of an opposing team. His mother suggested that a combination of salt in his shoes, patience, and prayer would do the trick. Michael, seeing his mother's success with plants, agreed to give it a try, but after several months, he was disappointed to see that he was still the same size. While his mother prayed, he practiced instead of playing but still he didn't grow. When he told his father that he needed to be taller, his father explained that he was already a great player because of his heart, and that "practice, determination, and giving your best" were the things that made someone a winner. Michael returned to playing basketball and made the winning basket for his brothers' team. This readable and entertaining story will delight the superstar's fans. Nelson's illustrations bring the right blend of vivid color, realism, and personality, giving youngsters plenty of details to pore over between readings. It should read aloud well for younger children and their parents, and independent readers will enjoy it on their own.

Michael Jordan's Mom and Sister Wrote This Book!

Wonderful story about Michael Jordan and his family. Easy to read and heartfelt as the story explains what may happen if you believe in yourself and are willing to work hard. AND, this book is written by two women who know Michael Jordan very well, his beloved mom and sister. The perspective and interest changes dramatically as I read to children Salt in His Shoes and end the story by pointing out who wrote the book. I have read this story to several groups of children and it does not surprise me when I am requested to read it a second time immediately after the first time. The illustrations compliment the words. The facial expressions, hand, and leg muscles, body movement, and much detail all add to the story.

We love this book- of course, we're children of the MJ era, so I love reading about his childhood (however accurate it may be), but the story overall is great for kids - emphasizing hard work and patience for success. Very encouraging, uplifting story that's also a lot of fun. Very appropriate for 3-4 year old level, up through older kids who will understand some of the underlying messages more clearly. Great illustrations, as well.

This is THE book that I would definitely recommend for anyone wanting to cook and bake good Scots fair. The recipes are easy to follow especially for beginners. Many of have become staples in my list of menus for guests and family. 5-star review on Amazon --.

This very detailed recipe book is for any cook - novice to experienced - who wants to explore a variety of Scottish fare. Not only will you learn how to prepare the dishes, you will also learn about their history. Linguists will enjoy learning about the etymology of ingredients, utensils and the dishes themselves. You'll end up wanting to get a "spurtle", keep neeps in your larder and add rumbledethumps, cullen skink and atholl brose to your menus - and it's even better if you like oatmeal. Catherine Brown has done an excellent job in compiling Classic Scots Cookery. I recommend this book highly.

Not as good as it says it is

The so called CD of drawings is a joke. True, the drawings are in a real CAD format but they are really nothing more that worthless sketches. Buy the book for the information provide (however brief) on each structure but not for the CD.

Fantastic resource for students

This is a tremendous compendium of guess what--key houses. What's initially impressive are the author's editorial choices. The important, canonical, expected houses are here, (Farnsworth, Villa Savoye, Fallingwater, Aalto, Kahn, Gropius, Eames are represented), but there are many pleasant and welcome surprises, like the Wittgenstein house and the rotating Villa Girasole. Important choices you'd expect to be left out, like the Melnikov house or the Shodhan house, are included, so, along with the CD, which may have some flaws or limitations, nonetheless gives architecture students an amazing archive of case study material at their fingertips. Highly recommended.

Important examples missing | British bias | selections from the end of the 20th century less convincing, over represented.

Interesting but disappointing. Naturally, a book like this is bound to attract controversy and invite others to challenge the choices made. The author describes the book as derived from the artistic canon of 20th century houses, meaning the houses that are the most famous, well known and influential... so it's a worth controversy. Maybe the most valuable aspect of the book is that it shapes a discussion of what should be included in the canon of 20th century architecture. That said, I thought there were too many biases shaping the list that the author should have challenged in his own mind as he developed this book. Hence three stars instead of four.

The biases that seem to be at work here: 1. A British bias...a good number of British houses included would not be selected by an author who was not British or did not have a long list of books on British architecture to his credit. 2. A late 20th century bias...the houses from the end of the century are naturally less convincing and will be very different for any architectural historian writing the same book 100 years from now. 3. A modern architecture bias...as is often said, history is written by the winners and the polemicists of modern architecture enforced a ban on the serious consideration of the non-modern despite the fact that architecture other than modern was what prominent architects were building during the first half of the 20th century. The only exception to this tyranny, in this book, is a house by Lutyens (every modern architects favorite historicist.)

The two obvious omissions from the book that occur to me are the Palais Stoclet, Brussels by Josef Hoffman and the Walter L. Dodge House, Los Angeles by Irving Gill. To me these seem like glaring omissions, but other readers will, no doubt, have their own to offer.

A Reasoned And Fair Assessment of The Obama Presidency

It is hard to find any book about any presidential figure that is fair and balanced, unless you are looking at presidents that are long dead. The author, while clearly a believer in Obama, didn't pull any punches and described where and when Obama made mistakes. And there were mistakes made through his presidency….times when he should have ridden something harder through Congress and times when he just didn't follow through.

The author looks at a number of aspects of the Obama presidency, but starts with race relations and how that affected both of his elections and how it created tension with certain groups as soon as he was elected. It is sad, but racism is still very much alive in today's society. From then on he looks at the legislative agenda and just exactly what Obama got accomplished in his 2 terms. Just a short sample reads like this:

Stabilizing and repairing the worst economy since the Great Depression.
Passing a huge stimulus program that produced jobs and improved infrastructure
Brought the auto industry back from the brink of collapse along with the other companies that supply them
Reformed the healthcare system
Wall St reforms that protect consumers
Drastically cut the unemployment rate
Expanded the use of alternative energy forms

And this is only a partial list of Obama's accomplishments.

The book is an excellent read and I highly recommend it to anyone…particularly those who don't believe Obama accomplished much. It will open your eyes to just how busy he was. One reason I think people are unaware of his accomplishments is because he didn't go about bragging about them (unlike today, where the President has to prove he can sign his name every time he signs something). An excellent read and a great early book on President Obama's legacy.

The Obama Legacy: a detailed & critical examination with mainly positive conclusions

Living in Europe but traveling regularly to the USA, I am often astounded at how many Americans don’t appreciate what a popular POTUS Barack Obama has become these past 8 years throughout the rest of the world. Outside the USA people admire his intelligence, strength of character, strong moral core, consistency and natural leadership qualities. His presidency has increased respect for America throughout the world after the GWB/Cheney era where it was probably at an all-time low. You might think even those on the political right would appreciate how much Obama has boosted America’s image abroad (he has truly “made America great again”), but it seems many of them don’t want to admit it.

Jonathan Chait is definitely an Obama fan, but his book is nevertheless far from an uncritical eulogy. He explores Obama’s legacy by focusing on a few big policy areas: saving the economy with a huge stimulus after the 2008 financial crisis when GWB had already committed to bailing out Wall Street; saving the US auto industry from destruction; the ACA which has finally moved America towards First World country status by making healthcare affordable to >20 million Americans previously denied cover; taking a global leadership role in combating climate change, and his successes - and failures - in foreign policy.

Above all, Chait’s eloquence and ability to explain the complexities of macro-economics and healthcare reforms amid competing interests/industry lobbying is what makes this book so valuable; for example his succinct 5-page summary of the broken US healthcare system which had been worsening for decades with spiraling costs and poor outcomes per $ spent is a masterpiece of brevity, literacy and impartial thoroughness. The ACA was passed in the teeth of opposition from both left and right, but has proved to be popular with millions of ‘red state’ voters who have come to rely on it even as they vote for senators and congressional representatives dedicated to dismantling it!

Chait demonstrates how Obama succeeded with his economically progressive agenda in the teeth of six years of obfuscation by a Republican-dominated congress and the grass-roots militancy of the tea partyers by highly skilled political management in DC combined with an implacable determination to bring long-term change, even if in some cases it turned out to be incomplete or incremental change. In areas of foreign policy however, Chait sees the Obama years as only partially successful: by choosing to keep America out of the Syrian civil war it’s almost certain the conflict was prolonged, the toll of death and destruction escalated and the refugee crisis exacerbated. By withdrawing US troops from Iraq (a 2008 election pledge) a vacuum was left which allowed IS to form up, take control of the north of the country and exploit the instability of the Syrian Civil War. Chait however gives Obama full credit for thawing US relations with Cuba, negotiating the Iran nuclear deal and covertly supporting democratic movements during the Arab Spring (NB Libya fell apart following Gaddafi’s overthrow not because of too much US commitment, but because of not enough). Obama’s committed global leadership on the climate change issue is a particularly impressive achievement, now unfortunately under threat from the new 2017 administration.

Overall, a fine and balanced book from Jonathan Chait on what history may judge to be one of America’s greatest presidents: the eloquent, highly intelligent, cautious, good-humored, principled and completely scandal-free Barack Obama, who left office with an unprecedented >60% approval rating. How could a black president be all these things? The audacity of it!

He destroys the arguments of many of the revisionist historians by quoting much that was reported from the Eastern front in reports to the high command in Berlin. He shows that it is inconceivable that the instructions to carry out the atrocities did not effectively come right from the top, Adolph Hitler,Himmler and Heydrich. I found a weakness in the history and the conclusions that Ezergailis sits on the fence with respect to the culpability of the Latvians themselves. He appears inhibited by his own Latvian background, although the facts he has unearthed show that the Latvians themselves bear a heavy responsibility for the murder of the Jews. He seems unwilling to draw the conclusions, which his own research has in fact made clear. This was disappointing, though in many ways understandable. The value of the work is that it also prepares the ground for further historical research on this tragic episode in Latvian history. Michael Standen.

To the best of my knowledge this is the only book written about the Holocaust in Latvia, and in English, that was written through extensive research of existing source documents. That alone makes it worth reading.

This book gives the best description of the Arajis Kommando, and its leader, that I have read. The author describes the role of fraternities in Latvia and how Arajis used his connections inside one of the largest for recruiting purposes. Arajis comes off as yet another self-seeking power and recognition hungry flea that decided to catch a ride on the hyena that was the Reich.

What puzzled me was the authors insistence that Latvian auxillaries were the primary killers of the Jews and members of the communist party. My reading of this book left me somewhat doubtful as the author discusses how the Arajis Kommando was slow to organize that fateful summer. Also, Latvian auxillaries were not trusted with weapons other than rifles and pistols (pre 1943) and the ammo issued was counted before an after they were on duty.

I have no doubt that Latvians killed Jews and the Arajis Kommando helped. I am just not as positive as the author they killed as many of them. Yet, I write this and know I never would have even thought about it without the author having written this book. For me, this is why I read, and why I like history so much.

The book also discusses the clash between those who wanted (Lohse)to wring the maximum amount of productive labor from selected Jews and those who wanted to kill them all now (SD). The same clash was repeated through out the east and I found it interesting to read the logic behind it. Something few books touch upon.

A hard but unbiased look-- frank, thorough and surprising

Ezergailis' account of holocaust in Latvia is based on his analysis of German, Latvian, and Soviet sources, the latter just made available when he wrote his book. He describes the position of the Jews in pre War Latvia, the attitude of the government toward the Jews, and the rise of antisemitism in certain segments of what was then "a Jewish friendly state." Ezegailis also details the fate of the Jews in sobering passages in which he names those responsible for their deaths. He analyzes how the Nazis used their propaganda to enlist Latvian participation and where this worked. He also discusses how the Soviets used a similar line to discredit Latvian nationalists and ironically, how many American Latvians bought those arguments. To paraphrase the author, the Jews and the Latvians were stuck between two devils. The Latvians chose one; the Jews chose another.
I have traveled through the country several times to meet Latvians and Latvian Jews who survived the War. In a few cases, I have spoken to actual witnesses both in Riga, the capital, and in the rural areas of the country. I think I am in a position to comment on Ezegailis' book. It is a thorough work of scholarship for anyone interested in that sad time and the complex world it left.
