An interesting happiness textbook, not so much of a novel

Since I really enjoy reading books about happiness, I was excited to find this slim volume that purports to be a novel. Ostensibly, this is a story about a man vacationing in Bali, but it is really a series of conversations between a typical Westerner and a sage, enlightened master. The master asks probing questions, tells parable-like stories, and even assigns homework. He also references pop culture and modern scientific studies in order to get his message across.

I hugely enjoyed Master Samtyang's teachings and his dry, somewhat bizarre wit. The setting of the beaches and jungles of Bali is very appealing.

Julian, as the story's protagonist, is pretty much a shell, a reasonable Everyman stand in for ourselves. There is no plot or action to the book, aside from the important questions posed between master and student. Don't pick this book up looking for an absorbing tale. That's just not what this book is. It is clearly a self help book with a thin veneer of "novel" as the dressing.

If you've read and enjoyed The Way of the Peaceful Warrior, you will be familiar with this genre. This has even less plot, and is a shorter book in any case. I do appreciate books along these lines - books like 2150 AD, Illusions, Celestine Prophecy, Stranger in a Strange Land, Peaceful Warrior - and dervived a lot of learning from The Man Who Wanted To Be Happy.

In fact, I even read the book a second time, with highlighter pen at hand to better mark the learnings lessons and insights within. I've enjoyed noting a section and then going for a run to meditate on how to apply the concepts to my own life. What does MY happiest life look like? What obstacles do I believe are in my way? How do my choices limit my perspective?

Lastly, I found the penultimate chapter about the lessons of money very enlightening. I've always felt it to be true that money has little to do with life satisfaction or happiness, but I didn't notice my condescending attitude towards those who pursue ambition and material goods. This book's lessons showed me how my "noble" perceptions on frugality kept me just as chained by money as the next person. This is something to meditate on for my next run, in any case!

Recommended to people who like self-help books with a little bit of storyline thrown in for cohesion. Not recommended at all as a straight novel.

a self help class wrapped in a novella - Perfect for 2013

With all the negativity flowing around us the last 6 years this book was a timely and enjoyable surprise. I quick read at 150 short pages there isn't alot of depth but in this hectic world it gives you more than enough to think and act on.

The message: you are in control of you. Only you have the power to allow yourself to be happy. Rid yourself of the Debbie Downers, rid your self of the bigots, lots of money is not a requirement for happiness. Find out what makes you happy and live it.

I would have rated it 4 stars as self help book and 4 stars as a novel but the combination made it 5 stars for me.

With my father dying in December, my 33 year career ending last week, 6 job changes in 3 years this was a perfectly timed book for me.

Original and unoriginal at the same time

The author's bio at the end of the book says, "His books are based on the principles of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP)." I thought that was a strange claim to make for a book, because NLP can be a form of hypnosis, so I first read that statement that there are bits of subliminal hypnosis encoded in this book that will make you do the author's will.

Luckily, though, what the statement in the bio means is that this book is a rehash of a lot of stuff that other NLP experts have talked about. There obviously wasn't enough NLP science in this book to influence me that much.

But the reason I picked this book is that I'm fascinated with happiness, and the pursuit of happiness, and I was hoping that this book would teach me something. The whole point of this book (sorry for the spoiler) is that you will be happy if you keep coming up with new challenges and keep accomplishing them, and if you feel in control of your destiny while you're doing it.

But that's just the last few chapters. Most of the book is about how you create your own destiny by your outlook on life. It sounds like The Secret, but it's a lot more like Anthony Robbins. In fact, I've already read most of the "profound wisdom" and examples that were in this book, in Robbins' books before.

The story of the book is pretty interesting. It's about a high school teacher who spends a month vacation every summer in Bali, who decides to visit a guru every day for a week. The narrative of the story was pretty interesting.

So, if you want to read every text available about happiness, or if you need a quick, short motivational book, then definitely read this. But you won't be missing out on too much if you pass on this book.

-The main character is way too enamored with the guru, for only having met him a couple days ago
-How does a high school teacher get enough money to take a month long vacation to Bali every year?
-How much of the facts in this book are real facts, versus just being regurgitated from other new age or self help books? I could not tell
-When the main character realizes cool stuff, he realizes that everyone else just isn't as enlightened as he is. I took it as condescension
-Even though the story is interesting, I couldn't ever get lost in it. The writing was so jarring, that I kept remembering that this is a story that is trying to teach me a lesson.
-It makes it seem like if you change your job, you'll find happiness

So Long a Letter is a landmark book - a sensation in its own country and an education for outsiders. Mariama Ba, a longtime women's activist, set out to write a book that exposed the double standard between men and women in Africa. The result, So Long a Letter, eventually won the first Noma Award for Publishing in Africa. The book itself takes the form of a long letter written by a widow, Ramatoulaye, to her friend, over the mandatory forty-day mourning period following the death of a husband. Both women had married for love and had happy, productive marriages; both were educated, had work they loved and were intellectually alive. During their lives, both of these women's husbands chose to take a second wife - and each woman then made a different choice. Ramatoulaye decided to stay married, although it meant rarely seeing her husband and knowing that he was squandering money on a young girl, a friend of her own daughter. Ramatoulaye's friend divorced her husband and eventually left the country, settling in the United States. In her letter, Ramatoulaye examines her life and that of other women of Senegal - their upbringing and training and the cultural restrictions placed upon them. A widow's poignant story

Mariama Ba's So Long a Letter, clearly demonstrates the power of the pen.
Middle aged Senegalese school teacher, Ramatoulaye, who is an educated Muslim woman, a mother, an abandoned wife, and now a widow adjusts to her changing roles with strength but sadness.
She writes a letter to her long time friend, Aissatou, whose husband also chose to take a second wife years before; Aissatou now lives abroad as a single woman. As Ramatoulaye says to her friend by way of introduction, "Our long association has taught me that confiding in other allays pain."
And so Ramatoulaye begins her story. In the pages that follow, little by little, Ramatoulaye takes us into her world, her culture, her past. Ba shows the reader how although a woman's experiences and opportunities might have changed somewhat in the 20th century, it becomes clear how the hopes and dreams and disappointments of Ramatoulaye's mother's mother, her mother, and Ramatoulaye, herself, all tie into each other.
We learn about Ramatoulaye's deep pain when after decades of matrimony and friendship with her husband Modou suddenly grind to a halt as Ramatoulaye's husband reveals an affair with one of their daughter's classmates to leave the house to start a new family.
Ba's skill as a writer and as an advocate for the woman's voice, lies not in preaching or didactical posturing, but instead by a subtle demonstration of what actually happened.
She invites the reader to see the different sides and roles people play in Ramatoulaye's life and does not make it a black/white issue.
However, this work will definitely appeal to women who are interested in learning about a feminist/womanist perspective on other cultures as well as women who are well versed in West African culture.
Detractors might call this work an angry book, while on the other side of the spectrum, ultra feminists might dismiss Ramatoulaye as missing the ball for failing to vociferously denounce sexism in addition to not taking the opportunity to criticize a culturally inspired fundamentalist sexist rendering of Islam.
Ultimately, So Long a Letter does not become bogged down into politics, nor does Ramatoulaye become confined as a victim or a figure that we, the reader, should pity. Instead this patient and beautiful character talks about how she has learned, in the words of Voltaire, to cultivate one's garden or in the words of Southern Black women, to make lemonade, when life kicks you down.
So, this timeless classic story transforms into a parable about friendship and love and most important of all, hope. As Ramatoulaye writes in her final paragraph to her friend, "Despite everything, disappointments and humiliations-hope still lives in within me. It is from the dirty and nauseating humus that the green plant sprouts into life, and I can feel new buds springing up in me. The word 'happiness' does indeed have meaning," doesn't it? I shall go out in search of it ...

A moving story with a universal theme

I was introduced to this book by a friend who said that it changed the direction of her life. Indeed, I can see how anyone with an open mind would find a personal connection with Ramatoulaye's story. The comments about women's issues in the other reviews should not dissuade any man or woman from reading this book. Who has not suffered disappointment, betrayal, fear, and intense sadness? And who does not need to know that even through the worst that life throws at you, there is hope? Survival is not necessarily reserved for the fittest. Ramatoulaye stoicly accepts her husband's betrayal, but inside she suffers, and through that suffering and a subtle rendering of life's constant comedy she gains strength and independence. Again, any son, daughter, mother, father, wife, or husband will gain something valuable from So Long a Letter.

Marriage, motherhood, and friendship

"So Long a Letter," by Mariama Ba, is a short novel (only 90 pages), but it is rich in ideas and emotions. According to a note about Ba at the beginning of the book, she was born in the African nation of Senegal and died in 1981. The book has been translated from French by Modupe Bode-Thomas.
This novel is written in the form of a long letter by Ramatoulaye, a Senegalese widow, to her friend Aissatou. Ramatoulaye discusses the lives, marriages and families of both women, and reflects on their friendship. As she writes, the story of her life is fleshed out.
Ba has created a fascinating look at postcolonial life in the former French West Africa. This portrait is decidedly from a woman's perspective and is focused on issues that particularly impact women's lives. Ba explores a multigenerational web that links women and men together.
Ba's subject matter includes motherhood, marriage, religion, education, and politics. Particularly fascinating are her explorations of the role of the "griot" (described in the book's endnotes as "part-poet, part-musician, part-sorcerer") and the practice of cowrie shell divination. A key element in the book is polygamy as practiced in the Muslim African world.
The book deals much with women's relationships--with husbands, with children, with adult female relatives, and with friends. The book is about surviving loss and disappointment; it's also about hope and personal growth...

Love these books!

My husband and son are huge fans of Theodore Boone. Grisham has done a great job of transitioning to a voice that the younger audience can connect to. The situations are real and the characters deal with them honestly. The plot is interesting and does not resolve quickly or easily. They have learned a lot about the legal world and how it impacts the everyday life.

Page turning novel; A great addition to the series

First and foremost, I am a teenager who has read every book of this series.

I've been keeping an eye on the release date of this book for a couple months after getting my hands on the third installment of this series. Amazon was really quick and arrived on the day it was released (preordered).

Overall, I did like the novel, giving it a sold B+. It included some modern topics that are currently being debated. It doesn't follow the previous installments where Theo Boone focuses on Pete Duffy and the murder case; it was very refreshing and showed Theo's continued strength to fight for what he thinks is right.

The book includes politics (it will become very obvious), environmental issues, and the shady business Mr.Boone does. It does get a little bit bloody halfway through, but I felt the ending was a bit rushed and wished the ending could be a bit better. I was surprised Theo knew what "eminent domain" is, but has no idea where tax dollars go, basic economy, or what an "activist" is. Simply put, it's glaringly unrealistic.

The book is pretty good. I cannot wait for the fifth installment.

Rather Slow Starter But Okay After That

This book is the fourth book of the Theodore Boone Series. The series is all about Theo who is the only child of two lawyers. His father is an estate lawyer and his mother is a divorce lawyer. Theo loves the law and plans to be a famous trial lawyer some day. He loves the law so much that he has his own small "law office" within his parents' offices. He gives advice and helps out friends as much as he can.

In this fourth book of the series, Theo is faced with a problem that has something to do with budgets. He is very sad to learn that budget cuts are forcing his school to make certain changes. But, as there are cutbacks on one hand, the town council is considering voting on a project that will cost $200 million dollars. To make things much more worrisome, Theo's friend Hardie asks him whether the government can simply take the land that has been in his family for almost a century just to build something.

As he and his friends are spending some time fishing on the property that Hardie's family calls their own, his dog Judge gets brutally attacked by men who claim to be surveyors. They even shoved one of the boys and was rough with Theo himself. Judge is lucky to be alive and Theo's parents take the men to Animal Court for cruelty.

Theo has to explain about eminent domain and I have to admit that the explanation is clear and easy to understand especially for young children. The concept of acting on something that kids passionately care about is well presented.

However, the story starts out rather slowly. It only picks-up after an incident at the Quinn property which is pretty far into the book.

About the Author
Trent C. Butler is a freelance author and editor. He served ten years on the faculty of the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Ruschilkon, Switzerland, and for twenty-two years as editor and editorial director for Holman Bible Publishers and LifeWay. He wrote the Word Biblical Commentary volume on Joshua, the Layman s Bible Book Commentary on Isaiah, the Holman Old Testament Commentaries on Isaiah and Hosea through Micah, and the Holman New Testament Commentary on Luke. He served on the editorial Board of the Holman Christian Standard Bible, and edited the Holman Bible Dictionary. Dr. Butler has a Ph.D. in biblical studies and linguistics from Vanderbilt University, has done further study at Heidelberg and Zurich, and has participated in the excavation of Beersheba.

Max Anders (Th.M. Dallas Theological Seminary, D.Min Western Seminary) is the author of over 20 books and the creator and general editor of the32 volume "Holman Bible Commentary". Dr. Anders has taught on the college and seminary level, is one of the original team members with Walk Thru the Bible Ministries, and has pastored for over 20 years. He is the founder and president of 7 Marks, Inc., a ministry specializing insupport for local churches (www.7marks.org).

Good commentary

Not to many commentary's focus on life application especially when we study the Old Testament. Holman's views won't fit every church's needs but he does an excellent job of focusing on scripture and then realting it back to our lives today. If you are leading a Bible study on Hosea I would not recommend you use this book alone. Use another commentary to fill in the gaps that this commentary will leave.

Deceptive Description

The description of this book leads you to believe that it is a real reference book with 1595 pages, imagine my shock when it arrived as a 154 page coffee table book. I will keep it because it only cost 4.00 with shipping but this description needs to be changed completely. The cover of the book is not even the same thing. It does have the correct author and title but that is about it. This description needs changed on the site as it is completely incorrect in everything but what it is about. I am very disappointed as I was trying to get a big cat reference book for my grandson.

My fundamental practice.

I am reviewing this book because it is my main practice. I have tested it out and it works well.
The cynical response to my assertion would be: So what other 500 or so mystical
Yogic texts do you apply to your practice!!

It is a fair counter-argument. This book may be too gentle for some, considering I had done much
Mystic practice before finding this path. So that is my answer; after searching I have found a
Book which will guide me from the beginning to an intermediate level if practiced for six months
At most.

Other than learning about kundalini awakening side effects from other books, this book should take you on the
Right path. It is simple but not dumbed down.

Learn from the master himself!

Swami Rama teaches the mediation techniques that are taught in Himalayan Tradition over 5000 years by sages living cave monasteries. This is the best book on meditation, period.
