About the Author
Janette B. Benson is an Associate Dean, Morgridge College of Educationan and Associate Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of Denver. She recently served for five years as the Director of the University-wide Office of Academic Assessment and co-chaired the successful University reaccreditation. Dr. Benson’s expertise is in cognitive and sensorimotor development in infancy and early childhood, and her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, The MacArthur Foundation and the March of Dimes. Dr. Benson has published several articles, book chapters and has edited or co-edited several books, including The Encyclopedia of Infancy and Early Childhood Development. She has been the recipient of several awards and honors, including the University of Denver Scholar - Teacher of the Year (1993), the 2000 CASE Colorado Professor of the Year, a Carnegie Scholar, a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, member of the Board of Directors of Shortridge Academy, and the serial editor of Advances in Child Development and Behavior.

Marshall Haith is the John Evans Professor of Psychology at University of Denver. He has also been an NIMH research awardee, director of research at University of Denver, and Guggenehim fellow and visiting professor at University of Geneva, Switzerland. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Psychological Association, and the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, he is a member of the Society for Research in Child Development, the International Society for the Study of Behavior Development, and the International Conference for Infant Studies. Formerly the associate editor of the Monographs for the Society of Child Development, he has served on the editorial board of nine scientific journals relating to infant development and behavior. Recipient of the APA G. Stanley Hall Award for distinguished contributions to developmental psychology in 2000 and the SRCD Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award in 2003, he has authored 10 books and over 75 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles on infancy and early childhood development.

Marcum thoroughly documents the rival revolutionary parties—based as much on ethnicity as on ideology—that fought the Portuguese and each other. (Two major movements were active in the field up to 1966, when a third party emerged as a full contender.) The origin, programs, leadership, and structure of these parties are examined in considerable detail, including the extent to which their guerrilla operations were controlled by exiled insurgents. The book explores the transterritorial relations among the parties and their interaction with external powers, both before the collapse of Portuguese rule and during the civil war that followed. In particular, Marcum traces the shifting patterns of political and material support provided to the various factions by contiguous African nations, the United States, China, the Soviet Union, Cuba, and others, especially during the final phase of the struggle. The reportorial and scholarly sources referenced here make the civil war understandable—and demonstrate the extent of its predictability, if not its inevitability.

Dated, but Still the Best on the Subject

John Marcum's second volume on the Angolan revolution remains the landmark text on the subject. Based primarily on news reports, personally collected documents, and Marcum's own contacts among the revolutionary movements, the release of documents from both Portugal and the United States has yet to produce a better volume on the African side of the revolution. This fact explains why scholarly publications over the last decade on Angola consistently depend on Marcum's work to explain the revolutionary tumult before independence in 1975.

Marcum argues that economic, cultural, and geographic differences divided the movements in the predominantly Bakongo FNLA, the Mbundu-urban MPLA, and the Ovimbundu UNITA. Though the first two of these groups initially looked to the international stage to help free themselves from Portuguese colonialism, frustrations with the United Nations and the United States led them to focus more on the African-led liberation of Angola. Nonetheless, conflicts of personality and regional character prevented the nationalist organizations from creating a united front, leading internal squabbling to hinder the achievement of independence as much as the metropolitan military response. Nonetheless, in assessing the three groups, Marcum leans toward the MPLA, arguing that it represents the most coherent, national, and interracial of the three groups in its aims, makeup, and strategy. In contrast, the author continues to focus on the American side to demonstrate how intermittent official support privileged the paranoid and ineffective Holden Roberto based out of the Congo (Zaire). Publication in 1978 means that this book cannot incorporate realities of the last three decades, but it nonetheless stands out as the fairest and most comprehensive take on this key period in Angolan nationalism. As such, This book and the first volume that preceded it stand as essential reading for understanding the origins and effects of the American intervention in Angola under Gerald Ford.

Scarce, but highly recommended for those trying to understand the increasingly important nation of Angola.

Excellent text, but bulky

I have had my Riverside (1974 edn.) since college and still use it constantly. I can't break myself of it because the text is so good: the editor, G. B. Evans, is very cautious about changing the texts and even retains a few original spellings, so it feels very Elizabethan. Another good text is Pelican/Penguin, but it's expensive to buy all those individual volumes. Drawbacks: as another reviewer says, the notes are hard to keep track of, and the thing is so darned bulky! / I saw the new 2-volume edition in a bookstore recently and was disappointed. Most of the pages are photographically reproduced from the first edition, but they look like photocopies rather than the real thing. At least the smaller volumes might be easier to handle.

A solid if limited edition

I would not myself prescribe this edition if I needed to choose one for, say, a year-long course on Shakespeare, but it is respectable and valuable nonetheless, and I have never minded my students using it. In comparison to the Norton, it is far more sensible, level-headed, and sharper in its selection of what is relevant to the needs of most readers. It offers help in a way that for example the Oxford unannotated Complete Works does not. The level of scholarship is usually very sound, in all areas. However, the edition lacks the required intellectual life, to my mind, which it should have and which I find in David Bevington's edition (and, despite some perversities, in the Norton); it is in some ways a bit perfunctory, unenterprising, and not sufficiently incisive in its insights. This is also an edition which at times unduly tends to favour the interests of academics over those of ordinary readers. The text, notably, preserves a number of features which are quite unnecessarily archaic to a modern reader. Who benefits from being faced with such spellings as "bumbast" rather than "bombast"? The introductions are more often useful or predictable than truly engaging, and the explanatory notes are in several places not as informative as they should be. Even so, this is an edition of considerable merit, and one that those who for some mysterious reason do not wish to buy David Bevington's excellent edition would probably be best served by. - Joost Daalder, Professor of English, Flinders University, South Australia

Able student approval

I prescribed this edition for the Shakespeare course I taught in the University of the West Indies nearly 30 years ago. James Maxwell as editor guaranteed a reliable text, and I was astonished by the quantity of useful supporting material. One of my students - at that time very nationalistic and hostile to relics of colonialism - objected profoundly to a course concentrating on one author, and an English author at that. Also to the price and cumbersomeness of the prescribed text. As an able student she subsequently went on to complete her MA at Leeds and her Ph D at Yale. A couple of years back she was telephoning me in desperation to know where she could replace the book - now worn to pieces, and long one of her most prized possessions. She could not praise too highly the excellence of the Riverside as the most useful complete Shakespeare onthe market. Which was my own view, too.

Not the best hard-bound CITH, but OK

We got a bunch of four dollar Cat in the Hat books of various formats as party favors for my son's 4th birthday party. As you might expect, all of the books in this price range pale in comparison to more expensive titles like Inside Your Outside: All About the Human Body (Cat in the Hat's Learning Library). I'm reviewing the cheaper ones in relation to each other.

I reviewed four hard-bound Golden book formats available at this time (I think more are due in 2013). As you might expect, the hard-bound books are shorter than the paperback books in the same price range. This title had almost no educational value (both Born to Run! (Dr. Seuss/Cat in the Hat) (Little Golden Book) and Bamboozled (Dr. Seuss/Cat in the Hat) (Little Golden Book) were much better in this regard). Nevertheless, I found the story more engaging than The Thinga-ma-jigger is Coming Today! (Dr. Seuss/Cat in the Hat) (CITH Knows a Lot About That).

This book covers a lot of ground, it has valuable information for all types of cleaners. The first half of the book deals with ethics, uniforms, suppliers ect the second half deals with the actual cleaning techniques. Pair this book with Speed Cleaning to have a winning combo.

An oldie but a goodie

First off, if you're interested in this book, please read the description (or even just the title) before you buy it and complain about it.

This is a handbook for cleaners, not a guide for starting a business or staying on top of the latest products. It's a very good and timeless guide to the "whys" and the "hows" of cleaning for a living. It's also bursting with enthusiasm and professional pride, two qualities that cleaners and the people who hire them overlook to their own peril.

The book also has lots of advice about how cleaners should look and handle themselves on the job. Much of it is basic (helpful to the less socially adept of us), but there are quite a few pro tips. The one that first comes to mind is his warning that asking clients how the place looks after it's done is "cleaning suicide." He explains why that's true and how to handle post-cleanup conversations.

A really good guide to working as a professional cleaner, whether you're doing it temporarily to get by or know right off that it's something you want to make a career out of.

Not only did this book give information on how/what to clean but, how to set standards for yourself, how to take pride in your work, what is expected of you as an employee or as an employer. This book has a lot of great information on how to grow in the profession of cleaning including what you need to consider when starting your own cleaning business. This book is not designed for someone who just wants to clean houses - it is designed for primarily for business'. This book is an easy read and done with a touch of humour.
