The Australian's raw candor and stirring clarity in both words and images make this a rare nonfiction gem, with a power that grips the reader as if by the lapels. McLean's first recollections of paranoia come from adolescence, when he heard voices from the other side of the backyard fence. Soon he was picking up "messages" from automobile license plates, radios, and disembodied voices. Not unlike many who suffer from schizophrenia, to escape the torment of a constantly shifting reality, he self--medicated with the usual drugs of youth, alcohol and marijuana. Despite plunging ever deeper into mental illness, he managed to graduate from university, hold a job, and travel throughout Europe, thanks to the emotional support of family and friends, who often excused his bizarre episodes as personality quirks. Frequently at a loss to understand McLean, they nevertheless provided opportunities for him to conduct what he calls reality checks. The happy ending is that professional medical care has brought his illness under control, and he lives on his own. “Recovered Not Cured” is an awareness tool that would benefit any person needing to empathize with a loved one battling forms of schizophrenia. Richard McLean says, “Every creative endeavor seems to reveal its naiveté in time. I’m sure I will cringe at this book soon enough.” I hope he doesn’t, because his insights about belief in artificial and actual, and what time supplies in the realization and manifestation of significant symptoms are golden. He has been refined by torment, and has also learned to live with wayward connections. The author’s insights about watching television or listening to the radio are important, in the resultant mental exhaustion and anguish. So too, are a collection of journal entries that bring cognition to normally illusive points within a very abstract struggle. Mr. McLean's art accentuates and gives fascinating visuals. Through it all, and in spite of the oddities, he has one “back of the bus” crew to thank for making it home—where he eventually finds the help he needs to be “Recovered Not Cured”.

True candor that gives hope

I was deeply moved by the author's candid portrayal of some of the struggles with dealing with the schizophrenia. The honesty about episodes of psychosis, mixed with illustrations as a form of art therapy, are extremely poignant. There is humor and wit and utter frankness. Throughout the book, there are interspersed segments of people who communicate about their personal struggles with mental illness, or the experiences of caring for their loved ones. These excerpts are taken via on-line chat room forums. Overall, it is a story of hope that can give others confidence to be empathetic to mental illness and end stigmatization.

I really liked how the book was compiled

I am a writer and I also have schizophrenia. Richard gives a true and accurate account of psychosis. I really liked how the book was compiled. It included e-mails from other people suffering from schizophrenia, sketches trying to capture psychosis, and Richard's writing about the period in his life when he became ill. If you want to know the symptoms of schizophrenia from someone who lives with the illness, this book is an excellent choice.

Greater compassion required in America for immigrants

Reading Melissa Fleming’s book about the challenges Doaa faced in fleeing violence in Syria comes at an interesting time with Trump blocking immigration for Syrian refugees after they go through a 2 year screening to eliminate potential terrorists. (Doaa’s story is not about getting into the USA, but a safe passage to Europe). Naturally we have all heard about the plight of the Syrians, but only after you take the time to understand what Assad has done to his people do you get the full understanding of why Assad needs to be taken out, or face crimes against humanity. And to think that he was educate in the UK! My hope is that by reading Doaa’s account, Americans will have a greater degree of compassion for immigrants from war torn countries, or those ruled by despots. For the record, I am an immigrant having arrived in the US 30 years ago. I understand the challenge of settling into a new society, even though my home language is English.

If you are looking for a book that poignantly captures one of the largest humanitarian crises of our time through the lens of one young Syrian refugee's experience - this is the book for you. A powerful story of both loss and hope, it's as heart wrenching as it is uplifting. Also a page turner, I couldn't put it down. Beautiful book.

A good, solid reference book on safe shaper use

I recently bought a shaper and quickly realized that a large panel cutter spinning at 7,000 rpms could put one's body parts in harm's way. The overall theme of this book is "safety first". After introducing the reader to basic shaper operation and cutter setup, the author successfully discusses the construction and use of various jigs that are used to enhance the safe operation of any shaper. As I read through the book, it became obvious that I wanted to build several of the jigs listed in the various chapters. As with any reference book, the true test comes in it's ability to provide useful information. This book will continue to provide me with tips and techniques each time I use my shaper. I highly recommend this book.

Was a little disappointed with this one. I was hoping for "The" definitive Shaper book and what it is is an entry level primer. Almost everything in the book is from the author's experience, he has not searched other sources of information. Fortunately, he does have a good range of experience, so if you are starting out the book has a place....but a whole chapter on basic shaper profiles seems a bit of a waste

A New Kind of Hero

I continue to be amazed by the Repairman Jack novels. "Legacies" was nothing like "The Tomb", and "Conspiracies" is nothing like the other two. Each one is a new experience with a different rhythm. I especially love the weird paranormal ingredients in "Conspiracies" that were missing in "Legacies."
What I don't get, though, is why a reader (see one of the other reviews) would want Wilson to remake Repairman Jack (whom Dean Koonts says is "one of the most original and intriguing characters to arise out of contemporary fiction") into a Remo Williams retread. Some people just don't get it.
Don't listen, Mr. Wilson. Keep Repairman Jack just as he is: an original.

Repairman Jack is back and he is better than ever

No database contains information on Repairman Jack, who applies unorthodox methods to fix problems for people. Jack blends so well into the scenery, no one notices him, let alone remembers seeing him. Though a pragmatic person anchored into the material plane, Jack has battled some supernatural creatures in his time.

Jack's latest case comes to him via his home page on the Internet, which allows the Repairman to advertise, but remain invisible. Lewis Ehlers desperately wants to find his missing spouse Melanie. She appeared on his TV screen while he watched the Weather Channel and appealed to him to obtain the services of Jack. The Repairman accepts the case and soon attends a conspiracy buff conference where Melanie is scheduled to make an appearance. Jack meets the usual crazies, but also senses a malignant supernatural essence trying to crash the barrier into this world. Only Jack can hope to stop the creature from succeeding, but his odds of surviving the counter is slim.

Anyone who has ever read a Repairman Jack tale wonders what makes the man tick? He appears to be a normal person just by the nature of his conversations with his friends, but the average individual does not spend an inordinate amount of time making sure no trace exists of his ever being anywhere. Thus, Jack remains one of the most enigmatic characters around as readers realize they don't know Jack. Placing this puzzling protagonist inside a non-stop, action-packed thriller like CONSPIRACIES leave the audience wanting more novels starring Jack. As with his TOMB AND LEGACIES, F. Paul Wilson provides the audience with a triumphant tale starring a quirky hero who deserves wide fan attention.

About the Authors
Zhi-Pei Liang is a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Dr. Liang has contributed to the theory and applications of image reconstruction, constrained imaging, and image analysis. He received the Sylvia Sorkin Greenfield Best Paper Award of the Medical Physics Journal in 1990 and the National Science Foundation Career Award in 1995. Dr. Liang was named a Beckman Fellow of the UIUC Center for Advanced Study in 1997 and a Henry Magnuski Scholar for Outstanding Young Faculty Member in the ECE Department in 1999.
Paul C. Lauterbur is a Center-for-Advanced-Study professor of Medical Information Sciences, Chemistry, and Molecular and Integrative Physiology and professor in the Center for Biophysics and Computational Biology, the Bioengineering Program, and the Beckman Institute all at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Before conceiving of and demonstrating magnetic resonance imaging in 1971 1972, Dr. Lauterbur used nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to study molecular structures. Among his numerous awards are the 1987 National Medal of Science, 1990 Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science, and 1994 Kyoto Prize for Advanced Technology. Dr. Lauterbur is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

A definitive text for the signal processing of MRI

Magnetic resonance has recently recieved many riches in the form of excellent, definitive texts that have bundled together the advances of the last 20 or so years. Drs. Liang and Lauterbur have added to this trove by writing a text that goes beyond the standard descriptions of magnetic resonance image formation and including many advanced techniques available today, some of which they originated. The ideal audience for this text includes scientists, engineers, and physicians actively developing MRI applications from the physics on up. Though containing many recent developments it contains a core of medical imaging information that will not be outdated. The mathematical depth is sufficient to serve as a reference of basic and sophisticated methods but with enough pedagogical information to tutor the interested student. Liang and Lauterbur should be on the shelf of any serious professional or insightful student.

Excellent coverage of MR physics, however complicated maths.

The selection of the chapters and the overall coverage of this book are excellent. It provides an outstanding and detailed description of MR physics and of how MR signals are generated and processed. However, not being an engineer or a physicist but a MD interested in MRI, I had some problems with the mathematical background required to understand the formulas used in this book. I feel that the book would be greatly improved if a more detailed explanation to the mathematics were given. At this point, I would recommend this book to graduate students or Ph.D.'s in physics, in biomedical or in electrical engineering, who want to understand in detail the principles of MR signal generation and processing. Because of the somewhat complicated mathematics, the book might be somewhat less destined, but still of interest, to radiologists and MRI physicians who, like me, want to enhance their understanding of MR physics and signal processing.

Great Detail, But Lacking in Motivation

First let me describe the book as to its production quality. This is one of the typical IEEE productions, namely the paper quality is on par with your local newspaper, the binding cracks upon opening, and they have the annoying "enhancements" of shading examples in gray which often makes them unreadable. I have had this problem with most IEEE books and for the price they charge they should at least provide some quality in production.

Now to the content. The authors provide a comprehensive and detailed analysis of MRI and signal processing.

My concerns relate to the following issues:

1. MRI can be quite difficult. The reader must first understand the physics, then the signaling to effect a response signal, then the modulation of the response so as to select voxels to be detected, and then the Fourier analysis which produces the image. The reader, if approaching this for the first time, even a well educated signal processing engineer, should have a pathway to follow. The authors fail in this element. All the information is there, yet one must construct the framework.

2. Certain equations are critical. Others take one along the path. For example, Eq 3.150 and 3.154 are essential. They are what makes MRI. However the authors just slide from one to the other and then from Eq 4.1-4.5 use these without regard to a reasonable transition. They introduce a function M, and one suspects it may be M(w) or M(z) or M(t). Having taught material like this at MIT and written books on the subject of signal processing, one must be careful to delineate key transitions and important equations.

3. The authors have lots of equations but one gets lost in which ones count and how one should follow the "bread crumbs" to use a metaphor. The classic book by Van Trees on Detection and Estimation was the "gold standard" for taking the reader and/or student along the path and delineating key points and conclusions. In this text the authors just seem to jumble every equation together with equal value.

4. The heart of MRI is the signals used to do phase and frequency transitions across the elements to be processed. The discussion in this book regarding that is, I feel, quite weak. One should be given a good intuitive feeling and then apply the mathematics. As I have often told my students, first explain what is happening and then apply the mathematics to "pretty it up". Here the authors have almost bludgeoned the reader with mathematics.

The book contains great pearls, yet the quality of the printing, not the authors' fault, and the jumbling of every equation possible, leaves the reader wondering. A better press, publisher, and a rewrite with focus and builds of ideas would make this a great and much needed contribution to the field. It is clear that the authors know their material, it just needs fine tuning.

No One Quite Like Mary Cassatt

I am an artist who spends a lot of time using pastels and oils, and this book was beautiful. I loved each photo plate and will use it when I do demonstrations to art students. I like to talk about this amazing woman who brought the Impressionists to the United States too. She was a woman with strength, determination and talent, a woman to be admired.

What do you wish from a art book? Large pictures, of cause. That is exactly this book offered. I am learning oil painting, these large prints of Mary Cassatt's art works give me a lot of details to observe. I will purchase another copy of this book for my sister.

Crystal Feimster breaks new ground in her story of the racial politics of the postbellum South by focusing on the volatile issue of sexual violence.

Pairing the lives of two Southern women—Ida B. Wells, who fearlessly branded lynching a white tool of political terror against southern blacks, and Rebecca Latimer Felton, who urged white men to prove their manhood by lynching black men accused of raping white women—Feimster makes visible the ways in which black and white women sought protection and political power in the New South. While Wells was black and Felton was white, both were journalists, temperance women, suffragists, and anti-rape activists. By placing their concerns at the center of southern politics, Feimster illuminates a critical and novel aspect of southern racial and sexual dynamics. Despite being on opposite sides of the lynching question, both Wells and Felton sought protection from sexual violence and political empowerment for women.

Great Historical Reference

I am currently putting together a literature review for my Graduate Thesis about women and war in American History with a focus on violence towards military women. I have found very few sources that articulate violence against women prior to the Vietnam War, especially violence towards women that are, presumably, on the same side. What is most significant about the violence that southern women suffered at the hands of northern soldiers is that these men were, supposedly, fighting to end slavery and yet they were raping enslaved women.

It is important, as another reviewer stated, that history of violence in this country, and my concern here is violence towards women, not be forgotten because the "Good ole Days" were generally only good for middle and upper class white men.

This book is well researched and well written. What most amazes me, however, is that the author paints a vivd picture of the horrors suffered not only by black women of the ninteenth and early twentieth century, but white southern women as well. The author has laid out a model that I hope to be able to follow as I get deeper ionto my research, and that is looking at history from more than one angle.

A Horrifying Period in America

I realize that the book is intended as a scholarly analysis of "women and the politics of rape and lynching."
But, as I was reading through, I could not help but keep coming back to thinking just how carefully one must think through when engaging in any conversation about the 'gool old days.' As the young people say: To "keep it real" even the bad must be considered when discussing the old days.

An excellent juxtaposition/comparison of the two ladies: Ida B. Wells and Rebecca Felton and their handling of the position of women (and race) in an era where the two factors were so intertwined. Such that the position of women and race could get one ("justifiably") killed. Let's not repeat such a period.
