Font too small, but otherwise GREAT!!!

I would "LOVE" this if the font wasn't so small. I have purchased some of the older ones and have been using them and they've been great. When I switched to using the newer ones, the font is much smaller and there's much less "white space" to break up the content. So it's a bit challenging to focus for long periods of time...and unfortunately/fortunately Skousen draws you in unexpectedly for beautifully enriched long periods of time of memorable scripture study experiences. So...Joe Skousen--PLEASE consider making the font bigger again. It's us old folks that are buying these! Thanks.

A good book on recursion implemented in Java

In mathematics and computer science, recursion specifies a class of objects or methods by defining a few very simple base cases or methods, and then defining rules to break down complex cases into simpler cases. Of the books out there on recursion, this really is a very good one. This is the 20th anniversary edition of the author's classic book "Thinking Recursively", which was published in 1986, with all code illustrations now done in the Java programming language. In fact, this book has the exact same number of chapters with the exact same names as the original edition with improved and expanded material.

The author does a good job of comparing the procedural approach to the recursive approach while showing an example of a producing a "context-free grammar" in which the procedural approach fails. This is not only a good discussion of the shortcomings of the procedural approach, it has some concrete examples that explain the concept of the context-free grammar better than programming language textbooks that are dedicated to the cause. Next the book offers up the recursive solution for the familiar and classic Tower of Hanoi problem. This section uses index cards to illustrate the solution. Necessary tasks for each subgoal are listed on the index card and are gradually marked out to indicate progress in moving the disks from one tower to the other. There are also discussions on permutations and sorting that are best solved by recursion. Of course, you can find this information in most good algorithm textbooks, but you can't usually find in those textbooks the code examples that show the complete solution to the problem that you find in this book.

Where the book is particularly excellent and unique is in later chapters when it includes recursive solutions to graphical applications and even introduces the GPen class, which is defined in the acm.graphics package developed by the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), for this purpose. Drawings of fractals are used as an application to show how one carries out this recursive drawing. It is also explained that Java's graphical classes, though extensive, are not suited to recursive drawing.

This book contains quite a bit of mathematics as well as Java code, so the reader should already be proficient in Java programming as well as discrete mathematics. This book could serve as a textbook since besides its many examples it includes exercises with solutions.

I don't program in Java, mainly c++. If you program in any c-style language you will find this book insightful in Thinking about recursion. The examples are great and the book is written in a very nice style. I came upon this book by chance. I owned a second hand copy of the original with included examples in Pascal. I much prefer this edition. To get the most out of this book, I'd recommend you attempt and think about the questions at the end of each of the chapters. The mathematical induction related chapter was eye opening and very enjoyable. I'd recommend any text that Eric Roberts has written, he is obviously gifted in his ability to educate and make it so rewarding in the process.

This little book is a minor classic. First published 20 years ago, it gave an extended explanation of recursion, which is a vital concept in computer science. Of course, Java did not exist back then, so that edition used Pascal for the example code. But Pascal has undergone a severe downturn. Hence this second edition has code in Java.

Classic pedagogic examples like the Towers of Hanoi are shown to yield to a recursive assult. The code examples are concise. Not atypical of recursive methods. If you find the entire idea of recursion to be a little weird, you can focus on the text's examples. Unlike code for, say, GUI building, which is often voluminous, recursion is subtler. And far more elegant, if you appreciate this type of abstraction.

Roberts also brings up fractals. Another trendy topic. He shows that recursion and fractals are a very natural fit. The concept of self-similarity that underpins fractals is so easy to express in a recursive routine. If you understand recursion by this point in the text, a bonus may be the nice insight this gives into fractals.

The only minor dissenting point is that there seems to be no discussion about when you should not code a recursive solution, even if such a method is possible. If you have a large data set, that triggers a stack or heap overflow, due to repeated, recursive method calls, where each call pushes return address information for that method onto a stack. I have had to rewrite sections of my own code, that were originally recursive, due to this.

A Must Read For Serious Readers

My overall 2nd favorite book and -by far -favorite science fiction story. This book and the entire original 6-novel story taught me more about politics, ecology, psychology and the human condition than all of my schooling combined. A must read for anyone that seeks insight into why we do the things we do and how to really read others and sharply tune-in to what's going on around you, but it'll take concentrated reading and possibly a re-read or two for it to truly sink in. Admittedly, it is a typical sci-fi epic as far as "boy struggles, boy overcomes, boy rules" -but you have to take in mind the time of its writing: the late sixties. Besides, there are so many other strong characters that I find myself identifying with a new one on each re-read -and the plot twists and possible future for mankind can be mind-bending for new readers. I recommend this book for any and all book lovers, whether it's mystery, romance, science, technology, psychology, ecology, social, politics, hero or epic fantasy as your favorite genre, this novel touches on it all. Pity they've never been able to make a series of movies to give it justice.

Each time I read Dune I become richer

I'm not actually sure how many times I've read Dune; every decade maybe. It is extraordinary how each time I do it speaks of something different to me as I age. My first read as a young teen in the '70s was overwhelming with words and scenes I'd never experienced before. It was magical and one of the mind expanding elements of the New Age. Now, in 2017, it comes full circle to the fears of environmental impact and government off the beam. I've aged, and the story still offers an amazingly lucid reflection of reality. I highly recommend it across anyone's life span.

What can i say that hasn't been said before? Here it is ...

This book has been reviewed more than 1,667 times on Amazon, 1998 of those are five star ratings. So you know it's a great book, but why it's great may escape you from the reviews I read. I bought the book having heard it's a classic, but knowing absolutely nothing about it, and the reviews I read didn't make me more inclined to read it. The author is obviously a genius, I mean a calculus and physics kind of genius, who figured out what the magnetic draw of a charismatic president could do to a country more than 60 years ago. He dropped hundreds of spectacular gems you probably never even considered before. Things that could change the way you think about life. In addition, the story moves along more rapidly than most, and moves from step to step in a deeply coherent manner that was being set up for chapters but escaped your notice until it unfolded. Sometimes I was startled by the rapidness. All 900 pages of it. The other end of the universe from Stephenson or Mieville. This is the story of a 15 year old who suffered defeat and hid in the desert until he became the ultimate ruler and foundation of a new religion. Great plot, great characterization, great pace. Very little about the military stuff, a great deal about the other stuff. Great everything. Perhaps my favorite book. A fabulous read that will stick with you long after you put the book down.

About the Author
Steve Zumdahl is the author of market-leading textbooks in introductory chemistry, general chemistry, honors-level chemistry, and high school chemistry. Recently retired from his long-time position as Director of Undergraduate Programs at the University of Illinois, he has received numerous awards for his contributions to chemical education. These include the National Catalyst Award in recognition of his contribution to chemical education, the University of Illinois Teaching Award, the UIUC Liberal Arts and Sciences Advising Award, and the School of Chemical Sciences Teaching Award (five times). He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Wheaton College (IL), and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.

Susan A. Zumdahl earned a B.S. and M.A. in Chemistry at California State University--Fullerton. She has taught science and mathematics at all levels, including middle school, high school, community college, and university. She is past director of the Merit Program for Emerging Scholars in Chemistry at the University of Illinois. In addition, she spearheaded the development of a sophisticated web-based electronic homework system for chemistry and is co-author on several chemistry textbooks.

Laboratory program

I was looking at this to get some ideas for labs and see the quality of the lab manual. I am impressed with how comprehensive the lab program is and it is well written enough that high school chemistry students can reasonably use these labs.

Plenty of Room for Improvement

I am using this book for a correspondence audit course. I gave it two stars because this book deserves a negative review.

As stated by the other reviewer, this book rambles a lot. It reminds me of people in school and at work that think something must be of a certain length in order to be of good quality. Cutting out the BS and getting to the point would be more helpful.

Also, aside from rambling, the questions at the end of the unit are often poorly worded and confusing.

This book is poorly written. Buy it and see for yourself. I have learned a lot from it, but at considerably more effort than should be required. The users of this book clearly suffer from either a lack of competition or some sort of peer loyalty. I would not recommend this book. Unfortunately, I don't write the syllabus.

My biggest complaint with this textbook is that it lacks consistency in terms of flow; essentially, there are parts of this book that provide useful information and there are parts that will go on and on about nothing. Unfortunately the latter makes up a larger part of the textbook. There simply has to be a better book on auditing in todays environment.
